As usual, I'm confused. Took my 8mg of Amaryl before bed Sunday night. Awakened to 144 at 4:30AM (then glass of milk 1 carb). Know I screwed myself up by having whole wheat pancakes with pecans, bananas and strawberries (didn't finish them, though). Two hour post-prandial was 221 at 8:40AM. Tried to sleep from about 10AM until 12:30PM, but didn't do well as my hip was bothering me. Took a sample at 1PM which was 163. Had a lemon-pepper chicken strip salad (0 carbs) and the 2hr post (6:30PM) was 93. Dinner was yoghurt (2 carbs), cashews (lots which would be 3 carbs probably), 8oz AZ Tea (1 carb). The 2hr at 11:15PM was 230 (then took my 8mg Amaryl), and at 2AM it was 183.
144 - 221 - 163 - 93 - 230 - 183
Dang it anyway! What the heck is happening to me?
I know chronic pain will raise the #'s, but could the heat be stressing me and making my numbers higher? I've been sitting here for a couple of hours and having light sweats. After being 94 today, it's still in the high 80's. Don't have my A/C on in the house yet and didn't put a fan on me.
Enlighten me, please.

Kathi;
You had too many carbs for dinner and not enough protein. The amount of protein in the nuts and the yogurt wasn't enough to keep your from absorbing the carbohydrates too quickly. Plus that, when your blood sugar is 134 in the middle of the night, you don't need a snack. Besides any snack you have needs to be planned and needs to come from whatever you are allowed for that 24 hours.
What has the dietitian told you to have in the way of carbs and proteins? If I know what is planned for you I can better help you with your meal planning. I also noticed that you didn't have very many vegetables and fruits. You need 5 fruits and vegetables (total together) per day.
So please get back to me with your answer and I will see what advise I can give you.
Cool weather is on the way!

Dang Kathi where on earth are you living that it is that hot this time of year! I am in Massachusetts and we had fluerries last night! I don't like it in the 90's especially if iti s humid (unless I am on a beach in the carribbean) but I am jealous that you can go outside without a jacket on.
Good luck figuring out what is going on witht he levels. I know when I had my surgery recently they were crazy high for me for about a week. Hope your hip finds some relief soon.

I just think I need to get off my duff and do some serious meal planning. What do you think?
Ordered the Amaryl and Glucophage XR yesterday. Am curious what will happen to my A1C and other labs after two weeks on the Glucophage. Darn, I sure hope it drops down a long ways! My endo thinks with the Amaryl, it's probably gone down quite a bit.
Am allowed 8 units of carbs (15 each). Can't figure out how to get enough fruits w/o giving up something else that has carbs in it. I sure love my fruit, too!
Thanks for your input.
Yep, it's supposed to drop to the high 80's the next few days. Still wonder if the heat makes my numbers higher. Any thoughts?
Have an appt with my CDE next week.
Kathi, from what you said you had
I have a suggestion for your yogurt that could help lose carb grams per serving. Some single serving yogurts contain 45 grams of carb per container, so please be sure to read the labels if you like to try different brands. Blue Bunny makes 2 different types of yogurt that are very good. One is called "Lite 85" and has only 85 calories per container and 12-13 carbs per container. They also have a new one out called Carb Freedom that has 5 carbs per container and 90-100 calories per container. They have a lot of flavors and they are all sweetened with Splenda. Here's their site if you want to see the yogurt and other products they offer. http://www.bluebunny.com I have noticed that the Carb Freedom ones are a bit thicker, kind of like the Yoplait custard type ones and need to be stirred. By losing a carb serving, or more!, per container compared to what you've been eating, you would be able to add a serving of fruit and call it breakfast or lunch! I'm sure the checkers at the grocery store really wonder about me when I go thru with so much yogurt every week..and it's all Blue Bunny! My son loves their peach, so we always have a lot of peach just for him.
Kathi,
Is that 2 for breakfast, 3 for lunch and dinner? Or are veggies free and not counted into your carbs? This actually a little low in carbs. Did you see a dietitian for meal planning help?
If you have an English muffin and 4 ounces of milk for breakfast you have just had 32 grams of carbos or 2 carbs in your way of counting. Anything you have on that muffin doesn't count towards the carbs and you need some protein as there probably isn't enough in the milk to balance the carbs. With this reduced amount of carbs you are going to need to have your fruit with lunch and dinner or save your dinner fruit for a bedtime snack.
You are correct in being concerned about going to bed with a blood sugar under 100. You stand too much of a chance of having a hypoglycemic episode. Have some low fat yogurt and fruit for a snack. Look at the carton and try not to eat more than 15 grams of carbs.
The modern way of managing a diabetic eating plan is count the carbs and not the exchanges, which is what you have been taught to do. I was also taught this way but have learned to swing back and forth between the two systems. A very common diabetic meal plan now a days is 45 grams for breakfast and 60 for lunch and dinner. You take any snacks out of this amount, they are not added on. Also I have been told by the CDE that they no longer look at the amount of simple carbohydrates in something but just look at the total carbohydrates. This is because a carbo raises your blood sugar the same amount regardless of what kind it is. Those that have fiber attached to them raise it slower than the others.
Have you gotten yourself a good cookbook yet which has a listing of the nutritional exchanges for food? If you don't you need to get one. Both the ADA and the Joslin site have good cookbooks. Somebody said that you can also find them on eBay but I haven't tried there.
You have to learn to be a good label reader. I am really surprised that my husband isn't a better label reader than he is. We go round and around about how many carbos he is eating. He is actually learning more about this right now because I have had to be really careful about the amount of carbs I get for breakfast (not too many) and enough carbs for lunch and dinner. I had pretty much stopped eating carbs at dinner and I can't do that now. My doctor also told me that wasn't anyway to live! It has been so nice since I been on the insulin to be able to have a small baked potato.
Well I must go to bed as I have had a really busy day. I will chat with you more tomorrow.
Cheers,

I have non-fat milk when I get up with the cats at 5AM...that's 1 carb unit. Have to give it some value. The other 7 of 8 units (15 carbs each) can then be divided between lunch and dinner or 3 meals if I stay up after giving them their insulin. I don't usually have any snacks during the day unless I feel weak/dizzy. After checking my BS, I may have something, but that doesn't happen very often.
Yep, AZ tea has carbs! That's why I don't have any plans to buy any more. I'll stick to my regular tea. Recent research shows that coffee helps diabetics maintain good BS. So, I figure if I drink regular tea (not decaf) once in a while it might help also. It appears that herbal teas don't help at all.
Thanks for your input. I appreciate it lots.
Thanks for the Blue Bunny info. I saved the site to another folder. Albertson's and Fry's checkers sometimes question what I'm doing with so much yogurt and different kinds, too. Of course, I've been a Yoplait fan for years (34 gms carbohydrates). I just looked in the fridge, and the 6oz Yoplait Whips (which I like the best) have 25 carbs and 140 calories. Both these count as 2 units to be fair. I bought a 6-pk of 4 oz containers of Yoplait (110 calories & 22 carbs)which still counts as 2 units. Hee hee...have a bunch of Blue Bunny Lite 85, too. They're 6oz, 80 calories and 14 grams (1 unit). They were on sale so I bought a bunch. Have been eating the Whips because the expiration dates were earlier than the Blue Bunny. My friend said that Kroger has their own brand that is low, too. I haven't tried any of them yet although I did look at the labels. Nothing remarkable, I think. If the Blue Bunny tastes ok, I'll just stick with them.
Appreciate your help. Thanks.
The last few days I've been screwed up, but my numbers have been reasonable.
My post-meals have been a bit over the 140, but not too bad. I'm beginning to
think that I shouldn't have the lemon pepper salad more than a couple of days
a week. It sure does lower my post-prandial, but the ups and downs can't be
very good for me although I'm not getting anything close to 200's again.
Am going to change my CDE appt. for next week to a later date. Want to get my
questions together before I go this next time. Have to work on my taxes this
weekend and go to see the CPA the day I had planned on seeing the CDE.
Do you think the Glucophage XR is going to raise my numbers? This diabetes med
stuff confuses me. If it were antipsychotic, antianxiety, or other psych meds,
I'd have a handle on it because I'm familiar with most of them. This is new
territory for me.
Night...I've got to be up at 5AM for the cats. Thanks for your help as always!
