As usual, I'm confused. Took my 8mg of Amaryl before bed Sunday night. Awakened to 144 at 4:30AM (then glass of milk 1 carb). Know I screwed myself up by having whole wheat pancakes with pecans, bananas and strawberries (didn't finish them, though). Two hour post-prandial was 221 at 8:40AM. Tried to sleep from about 10AM until 12:30PM, but didn't do well as my hip was bothering me. Took a sample at 1PM which was 163. Had a lemon-pepper chicken strip salad (0 carbs) and the 2hr post (6:30PM) was 93. Dinner was yoghurt (2 carbs), cashews (lots which would be 3 carbs probably), 8oz AZ Tea (1 carb). The 2hr at 11:15PM was 230 (then took my 8mg Amaryl), and at 2AM it was 183.
144 - 221 - 163 - 93 - 230 - 183
Dang it anyway! What the heck is happening to me?
I know chronic pain will raise the #'s, but could the heat be stressing me and making my numbers higher? I've been sitting here for a couple of hours and having light sweats. After being 94 today, it's still in the high 80's. Don't have my A/C on in the house yet and didn't put a fan on me.
Enlighten me, please.

Kathi,
Hey Kathi! No, the Glucophage won't make your numbers go up...it just works with your liver in a way that prevents hypoglycemic reactions...which is a good thing! My fasting before starting Glucophage, diet and exercise was 192. Since starting the meds, diet and exercise, my highest fasting has been 124. Don't worry....you'll be fine!
I love the Blue Bunny....hope you will too! Every carb you can save on yogurt is a benefit!
Kathi,
No, the GluophageXR is not going to raise your numbers. It is going to lower them. By breaking down your insulin resistance you will be able to better use the insulin that you produce. That will lead to lowered numbers. I don't know where in the world someone got the idea that it would raise your numbers. You do need to eat some carbohydrates for cell regeneration. Besides if you never eat something that you really like, when you finally meet it, you won't be able to keep it under control.
Glucophage XR is 500 mgm of metformin mixed with a special polymer that allows for its slow release. Glucophage, regardless of formulation, improves the glucose tolerance in type 2 diabetics, lower both basal and post meal plasma glucose, decreases liver production of glucose, decreases intestinal absorption of glucose and improves insulin sensitivity. It also does not produce hypoglycemia like your amaryl can. If you have decreased kidney function, measured by the creatinine clearance being elevated, you shouldn't be taking metformin in any of its forms.
Most of the times I go there for 1 or 2 things, I end up with so much more!
Anyway, was walking up and down the ice cream aisle, back and forth, back and forth. Think I was trying to talk myself into buying something. Anyway, an older lady was looking at the Blue Bunny Health Smart bars. She said she was diabetic and thought the chocolate ones were really good. I'm not a chocolate fan (yep, I know...unusual), but did look at one that was orange, lime and lemon colors. She said they were good, too.
Well, bought a box (how did you guess). They're made with real fruit juices. They're 60 calories, 0 fat, 20 sodium, 0 protein, and 17 carbohydrates (sugars 1g and sorbitol 4g). So, that's 1 unit for me. Yipee!!! So, I can have one once in a while and not screw up everything. There's a warning on the food label that it can cause a laxative effect in sensitive people. Guess it's due to the milk content (for those who are lactose intolerant). It also has a note for diabetics that "the small amount of sugar comes from lactose which is a naturally occurring sugar in the milk used to produce the product". Sure has a lot of other gunk in the contents, though.
Looked to see if the yogurt was on sale again, but no luck.
Thanks for the insight! Saved it to my health file. Heck, now I have to find my last labs to check the creatine level before I start the darn stuff! I put them in a safe place...(real safe, huh, if I can't find them)
Well, today the first measurement was 127 at 5AM. Went out for lunch and it was 91 after the 2hr mark. I cleaned litter boxes and mopped part of the utility room during the 2hrs before I had to measure my BS. Sat down at the computer to ask a question about a DVD to somebody on the health & fitness board. Got really dizzy, was beginning to hyperventilate, and was disoriented. Took my BS again and it was 94. I think I was on the verge of dehydration again; didn't drink while I was doing the physical activities. Ate a banana and drank a large bottle of water, and then felt much better after about 15 minutes. Figured if it was because of the diabetes, the banana would fix it. However, now am sure that it was because I hadn't been keeping my fluid level up. I was in and out the the house maybe 10 times before I called it quits.
I sure am going to have to watch it this summer!
Oh, bought the DIABETES II, THE FIRST YEAR today. Will probably look through it mid-week. Have to work on taxes tomorrow & Monday. Was supposed to do it yesterday and today, but the spirit was weak and the motivation was close to nonexistent!
Thanks for all your help. It's nice having someone with medical knowledge to talk with. Just wish my medical knowledge was in this field instead of orthopedics and mental health.
Kathi,
The laxative effect is from the sugar alcohol not the lactose. Of course if someone is lactose intolerant it would bother them but the sugar alcohols bother some people without any milk products being near.
Speaking of diarrhea, what effect does diarrhea have on BS? Don't know what happened, but my 5 AM BS was 127. After lunch 2:45PM, and diarrhea, it was still 127. Was cramping most of the afternoon and early evening. By 8:45PM w/o any food between it was 91. Ate too many carbs for dinner, and it went up to almost 200. My poor body is playing games with me again. Of course, no thanks to me!
Called my PA this morning about the Glucophage XR to see since my AM BS have been around 110 to 128, if I really needed it. (Tonight is the first day in about 2 wks that I've had anything even close to 200, I'm pretty sure.) Of course, neither the PA nor their medication person (?) returned my call all day.
The reason I called them was because I'd received a call from Express Scripts
(my mail drug plan) asking if they could fill it with generic since they'd been
unable to get a call back from my doctor's office for almost 2 wks. The one
time I'd tried the generic I became quite ill (a couple of years ago). Anyway, the
cost is really strange. They quoted just over $60 which they say is about $15 lower
than over the counter. They drive me crazy!
