I live in a very warm climate too. I noticed some of the new postings were mentioning what to do about keeping our test kits cool enough in our hot cars. I suggest buying one of those small insulated carriers and putting a frozen 'Blue Ice' or Ziploc baggie full of ice in it, then place your test kit inside. A piece of bubble wrap or small towel placed between the kit and the ice should keep it from getting too cold. I carry a picnic cooler in the trunk of my car at all times, if it is very hot outside I would even place the smaller cooler inside of the larger one. I do not carry a purse anymore, because of back problems, but think that if I need the kit, it would be handy enough in the car. 2sweet02

Great idea about the cooler. I have bunches of blue ice. I have to take it with me to Costco when I go for the cats' insulin. Don't know why I didn't think of that.

See, it helps to ask y'all!

Thanks bunches.

I have been doing that for quite some time now and found it to be very handy for other things as well especially with kids in tow. The great things those coolers and portable ice can do for us all seems to never amaze me anymore. I know your suggestion with help many out when all of our climates hit those hot times. Take care and have a fabulous day!

I thought of another thing that I haven't thought of in a while. Our drug companies used to freeze soft drinks in the cans rather than use the Blue Ice (the soft drinks were cheaper), but we could also freeze orange juice to use it for the cooling agent. If we needed the sweetness of the orange juice, it would be there for us. 2sweet02

I do it with bottles of frozen water. As the water melts I have some cool water to drink. When i was going to school in a hotter area of California I did this all the time to keep my food cool. Killed two birds with one stone!

Some smart cookies are on this board! I always take a bottle of water with me to Costco.

Now I'll just freeze it a little while so I can bring the insulin home in better shape than packing it in a soda glass stuffed with ice around the box with a napkin around it!

Kathi,

My husband and I are planning a trip out of the country and as you know I have to take my insulin with me and keep it cool. So he was looking for something to buy today that I could store my insulin when it suddenly hit me that I could use one of those small meal thermos to keep my insulin in. I have many orthopedic problems and I have to make sure that things aren't too heavy for me to carry. He was thinking that I could take one of those carriers that holds a six pack in it but that really is too large for the amount that I have to carry. I bet security at the air port is going to love me carrying syringes, insulin, two monitors and a doseage calculator. Oh well!

Sometimes there are simple solutions to our problems that we never think about! LOL

The insulin probably won't be too much of a hassle; just think of the poor folk who have had hip replacements etc. My dear Aunt had to take her X-rays with her all of the time, and that was before 9/11! 2sweet02

Now I am envious. Going out of the country...where?

Check with your pharmacist. I think they may have small pkgs for cooling products.

I'd check if I were you.

Good luck.

Kathi,

I am going on a 10 day cruise to Russia. My husband has wanted to go to Russia for years. The only way I would agree is to go via a cruise. So that is what we are going to do. We start and end in Coppenhagen. I would like to stay for a while there a look at all the needlework but that won't happen! It will be nice to be away and to have someone else take care of me! But I am not going until the middle of June so I have a long time to plan. I have been on cruises before and I know how they handle diabetics so that part isn't a worry. They will even give me a red box for my cabin.

They increased my insulin yesterday to 12 units. Today I had to go to a meeting in the next town and when I arrived at the parking lot two bicycle cops were there. They had to talk to me about my car, which is a hybrid. I got up stairs to my meeting after being stopped by everybody to make sure the cops had given me a ticket for something. They didn't, it was a very friendly conversation. Anyway when I got up stairs I was very shaky and so I took my blood sugar. It was 64. Thank goodness the cops didn't that or they might have discussed more with me then what type of car I drive. This was at 4pm when my blood sugar is usually 100+. So frustrating!

Well I must read the other messages before I go to bed.
