Just diagnosed and overwhelmed a bit

First of all, I'm so glad I found this board.

My blood test results were read to me over the phone on Mon.  Yesterday the dr put me on Actos and exercise.  I see a dietician on Monday to learn how to check bs and to eat anew.  I'm glad I bought a treadmill last year.

My fast bs sugar was 157.  Two hours after eating was 196.  My hemoglobin was 7.3%.  Doc said it's a mild case, but something we need to get under control.  D. runs in my family (and in my husband's family).

I was really happy to see the recipe section here.  I'm also being treated for migraines and am on a diet for them too.  Wonder what I'll be able to eat???

I'm in a little shock, but also I'm determined to be in as much control as I can be.  Time to wear out the treadmill.

Thanks for listening.

Thanks for the good wishes for a year...it's only been since 1/21/04, that I was diagnosed. Oh, I started reading the book today. Made it through 5 chapters. Got anxious and decided to stop for a while. Good luck with the CDE and the education classes. You'll learn a lot!

Hi!

Can't wait for you to get your meter and start testing your blood sugar. Then you will really know what is going on. Also you will learn what 30 grams of carbos will do to your blood sugar regardless of your original level. When you are feeling shakey you really do need to test to tell where you are and if you need to treat your blood sugar you need to eat only one slice of bread, if the bread is 15 grams of carbos per slice. 30 Grams of carbos will cause your blood sugar to rise too much.

Do remember since you are new to diabetes that while your blood sugar is coming back down to normal you will experience false lows. This is when you feel like your blood sugar is low but it isn't, you are just adjust to a more normal level. Most probably your blood sugar has been elevated for sometime before you are diagnosed and it takes a little while for your brain to adjust to the more normal numbers.

Glad you have joined our conversation.

Glad you got the book. Reading it made me shakey! I'm trying really hard not to eat any bread because I know it makes my BS go way up.

Do you know what kind of meter she's getting for you? Let us know. If there are questions, y'all come, you hear?

Hopefully the cost for the strips and lancets isn't much. Let us know what you get.

Do you have insurance?

We have our fingers (in my case, a couple of sore ones this week) crossed for you.

I screwed up. The dial was set too high and I bled like mad Sunday and today...different fingers. You'd think I'd watch closer. Guess the idea of doing my sample at 5AM before I prepare the insulin for my two diabetic kitties would give me a chance to awaken.

Wrong Mr. Bill!!!

126? What's not normal about that? Had you eaten before seeing your doctor? Well, it's below 140. Hotcha!
