HI me again,

Yesterday my husband went in for his second fasting test and this morning they called to say that he is diabetic. Still no numbers, aarrghgh. But they made an appoitment for him to come in this afternoon to discuss treatment options. I told my husband that I would like to come to that appointment... and he didn't really say no or yes.

Now that he is diagnosed I feel like I have a lot more freedom to make suggestions about food and things to read. Before it was as if he didn't have to know anything or make any wise choices. Now I think he is open to learning about what he needs to do.

By the way, we live in the Seattle area and he is seeing an internist at Virginia Mason. They have a whole department for diabetics including a three day class for understanding it and everything.

I will let you know when I know more. I feel so lucky to have found you all.

Thanks,

Sharon

I'm glad you finally have a definitive answer and hope that he is as receptive as you think he will as he begins a new lifestyle. Being supportive is what he needs most right now.

Sharon,

Virginia Mason is a wonderful place to go and there is also a Joslin Clinic site in Seattle and it may be at Virginia Mason. I saw it when I was there last year but I just don't remember where it was. So check this out.

Thank you for your kind words about the board. This is a very nice place to be and I am glad we are able to be of assistance to you.

Hugs,

Mary Frances

Hi!

Went to Walmart yesterday. Found 3 fine bracelets (one with pearls) that I'm hoping to turn into med alert bracelets with lobster clasps and a new tag. If it doesn't work, I'm only out 1/3 of $5. I'll let you know how I do.

Well, at last you have some answers. Ask if you can attend the diabetes education classes with him. That way you'll know about foods, carbs, etc. to give him educated support.

(((hugs)))

I am so sorry Sharon that your husband got the shocking news he did not want to hear, because it is so much to take at once with so many questions going through his mind and yours. How ever it is great to hear that they are getting him in right away to get him started on medication to help him get his blood sugars under control since that is the first step, but also great to hear that they have classes to help educate him and yourself if you go with him to learn all you really need to know about diabetes. I also hope they also suggest that he see a dietician, because he will need to get a set meal plan going and that may make him a little upset for a while with having to change his eating habits and style. Do not fear though he will not go hungry at all since the meal plans are great for making sure that the diabetic person gets full. So be patient with him since this is all just new for him so please be supportive and understanding as he gets adjusted to the new life style he will have to live.

I am also close by with living in Spokane so we are not that far from one another at all. I am glad to have you join us and that we could be of help to you. We really appreciate all the kind words you gave to us, because it really means so much to us all. Wishing you both some good luck in learning all you can about diabetes and may it go smoothly. Take good care of yourselves and do keep us posted on how he is doing, because we would very much love to hear from you both. Have a fabulous day!
