Insulin question

I'll try to make this short. I am type 2 diabetic and take 3 insulin shots a day. I went for my every 3 month check-up 2 weeks ago. Doctor did the usual HbA1c blood test. IT came back as an 8!!!! It has never been this high before. What is confusing and puzzling to me is that I have NOT changed anything in my diet, exercise, medications, etc. Can one type of insulin stop working as well after a while? I take NPH and Humalog. I have not had symptoms of highs or lows (except I have noticed lately that I get really sleeping in the afternoon, but it could be spring fever..). On Friday morning, my blood sugar level was 232 when I got up. I am so confused and getting more and more scared each day. Any input would be helpful to me. Thanks!

Hi dpbears,
Welcome to the board. My name is Mary Frances and I am one of the community leaders for this board. I am a type 2 diabetic and a registered nurse. Any advise I may give is not a susbstitute for seeking medical advise from a health care practitioner of your choice. Also as of tomorrow I have been on insulin for one month. I have been a diabetic for 15 years and just moved on to insulin.
Diabetes is a progressive disease and it gets worse over time. That is the nature of a chronic disease. What is happening to you is that your medication isn't sufficent to control your blood sugars anymore. The goal for A1C now is 7 and preferrable
I have been a type 1 for over 28 years and on insulin for all that time. I have noticed that even with eating the same doing the same old thing does not always mean that blood sugars will stay in the same range. Considering things happen from day to day to cause more stress or what not, which as you might already now stress raises blood sugars as does illness. Being upset can also cause it as well. Having something different such as a different brand of something that you always eat can also be a thing to look into to see if it does have more carbs than your usual brand. Not getting moving around as much will also cause higher blood sugars. Even taking a shot in an area that has been used more often can cause the insulin not to get into the blood stream as fast, which I found that out when I was on shots and still have that same trouble on a insulin pump.
Maybe start a journal to see what could be causing the problem, because I have never had any trouble with insulin being the problem for high blood sugar unless it is no longer good. I really wish I could be of more help to you, but this is all I can tell you is that it is not your body getting to use to the insulin that it is not working no longer, because if that were the case I would of faced that problem way to much over the years. Think about what you ate or had to drink before the high blood sugar readings or if anything got you stressed or upset, because that might be the clue your looking for. I really hope that you can figure out why this is happening to you, because I know it is so hard to figure out not to mention also nerve racking at the same time. So just know that your not alone and that we are here for you if you have
