Question about my meds

I have a call into my doctor but I am thinking I need to swap my meds around some. Right now I take 2 mg of amaryl and 4 mg of avandia in the AM. By BS are often a little high at fasting and my BS seem to be higher after dinner than any other time of day (no matter HOW good I eat) SO. I am thinking this:

1.  My higher levels in the AM could be more from Insulin resistance so maybe I should take my Avandia at night.

2.  I think I might need to add another dose of amaryl before dinner. The amaryl seems to peak at about 1 hour for me.

Thoughts? Like I said I have a call into my doc and will keep you posted but wanted to see if my thoughts were on the right track.

Thanks!

This is only me thoughts on this matter. Is it at all possible that you are having what is knowns as the "dawn phenomenon" happening where your fasting levels are high from your blood sugar taking a drop in the middle of the night without you knowing about it. Have you tried setting an alarm to see how your blood sugar looks in the middle of the night? I had that problem and found it was only caused by my going low in the middle of the night, which we fixed that with my having a nite bite bar and taking my fast acting insulin then regular down a few until we got me leveled off just right.

Now as for your after dinner blood sugar level. Are you active after dinner or do you watch tv as most do? Since most tend to wine down after dinner with it getting close to bed time you might want to try maybe adjusting the amount of carbs you have at dinner to see if that helps by say even a 1/2 of carb so to say by portion size. I know that at times I have that problem and it is only caused by my not being very active at dinner time, wich I tried he lowering the amount of carbs I eat and it seems to help when I am sure I will not be doing anything so active.

These are just my 2 cents, but you are doing a great thing in calling you doctor to get his or her advice on things since they are the best source for information like this. I really hope you figure out what is going on and get it fixed, because I know how badly you want to get it all under control. Just wait until you are doing insulin, because your in for a whole new ball of wax with that since it is nothing like oral medications at all. How ever we all will be able to help you out with that part.

Michelle,

You may need to increase the amaryl to 4mgm. According to the manufacturer's instructions you are supposed to take it once per day and in the morning. I have never heard of taking at any other time until Kathi was told to do so.

Dawn phenomemom is only found in type 1 diabetics. It is your insulin resistance that you are seeing. Your liver starts converting fats into glycogen and you pancreas tries to produce more insulin to bring your blood sugar down. Because of your insulin useage defect your blood sugar is higher in the morning than at bedtime. There are meds on the market to specifically address this condition: Avandia is one and I wouldn't be surprised if your doctor increased your doseage of this med also.

Please let me know what you doctor has to say,

Mary Frances

MF - I talked with my doc yesterday and he wants me to try taking 2mg of amaryl in the AM and another 2 about 1/2 hour before dinner. He says to try this for 2-3 weeks and then possibly he will up my avandia as well. So off we go to ry something new...again. It is a constant balancing act. He is soo nice though he is prescribing me 4 mg of amaryl and I am to cut them in half. This way I only have to pay for a 30
