I noticed that I was getting bashed by a couple of ladies and one who really went to town on me! I want to say thank you some of your ladies were great with your info and advice, it helped knowing you was there for me.

Let me first say I came to this sit for info and help not to get bashed on, having that happen will not want me to come back. Yes I had very low blood sugar and when every one was saying go to emergency they were under the impression I was a diabetic which im not. My husband is a diabetic so I understand about high sugar levels but not low. That’s why I came to this site; I was not sure what was too low. One lady had mentioned why was I on the computer instead of calling 911, well my mother actually works for a doctor and she told my mom that sometimes that can happen and that its o.k. I know this did not sound right but it made me fill more relaxed in thinking there was nothing to worry about. My husband even said it’s not good but nothing to worry about. After I got the low reading I did eat some thing and kept munching on and off and finally it went up to the 70’s and I was feeling better .I also called my doctor to see if I can get in, he gave me instructions and told me to see him today. I know when you ladies say call 911 it’s because you care but please understand I do not understand this, that’s why I came to this site. I am going to the doctor this morning and I did check my levels on and off .So far they have stayed in the low 70’s I did tell my husband if it does drop down again like that than I would go to the ER. So please for you ladies who think I just sat hear and did nothing I did not, I asked a doctor and was told that’s o.k. and than I wanted reassurance from my husband who said it’s not good but not bad. I know there is something wrong and im going to day to see how I can get a handle on this.Im not writing this to be mean i just want to fill that i can come to this site with any problem without getting jumped on because i may not have made the right decision!

So far this morning im doing good!

Julie,

First let me say that I'm very glad that you are doing ok this morning and that you are seeing your doctor this morning. I didn't post yesterday because I didn't read the board until very late yesterday. I hope you understand that all of the replies (it seems to me)were meant to try to help you. I know some of them could have seemed a little demanding (maybe harsh) to you. But whether you are diabetic or not a blood sugar of 31 is too low. Normal people don't get that low. I'm confused that your doctor wasn't more concerned. My understanding is that at that level *anyone* is likely to go into a coma. That's why the other ladies were telling you to get help immediately - specifically medical help.

Here's where my understanding is a little fuzzy, but I'll tell you what my doctor told me. I am a prediabetic - this means that my sugars are a little high, but don't meet the threshold of diagnosis for diabetes. If I keep them under control, hopefully I will put off full-blown diabetes for a long time. And I am controlling with diet and exercise alone. Having said that, I asked my doctor about lows. I'm very aware of the danger since I had a close friend in college who was a type I and experienced them sometimes. He told me that since I was not on insulin or oral medication, I was at no more risk of lows than a normal person. He then translated that to say that there was virtually no risk of lows. Extrapolating from that, I'd say that there is something else causing your lows - not diabetes - since you are not on any diabetes meds. I'd say hypoglyecemia is much more likely - as several other ladies have pointed out. But I think others have said that there is some disagreement in the medical profession about the existence of such a disease. So please question your doctor carefully about your experience. I wonder if he really took you seriously yesterday and actually believed the bs number that you had.

Good luck and I hope you do continue to come back here. What people said yesterday was said out of concern for you. I'm sorry your feelings got hurt.

Norming fasting levels in a non diabetic are 70-110. Anything less than 70 is technically considered low and needs to be treated as a hypoglycemia. Brain function is affected when levels reach 50, so anything less needs to be treated as an emergency. There are several other medical issues that can cause hypoglycemia, including thyroid, liver and pituitary gland problems.

The advice and criticism you were given regarding not seeking emergency treatment was valid considering all of the dangers of such low blood sugar levels. To come to the board in a disoriented state of mind is not a safe nor wise decision. If this happens again, hopefully you will heed the advice of others and go directly to the ER, with or without insurance.

Thank you ann for your reply, i was so surprised the doctor did not seem more worried, actually i had to talk to his nurse who spoke to him.Im going in a couple of hours to see him. What made it hard was my mom spoke to her doctor she works for than later on i called my doctor, both did not seem that worried.I now know that i should have been more worried and done something ASAP but in the future i will know.

The out right criticism and talking about what is wrong with her that she is NOT listening to us... was NOT valid or necessary.

I'm sorry if you included me in the group that was "bashing" you. I didn't even sign on until 12 hours after your first posting. I do have a medical background, but I will only alert people to get care not give directions.

In fact, many years before I was diagnosed with diabetes I had several hypoglycemic episodes. I passed out and was taken to the ER with IV's in my arms a few of times.

I would suggest that you get on one of the search engines and look up hypoglycemia. Maybe you can find some information that would be of assistance.

Take care of yourself!
