Light Orange Juice?

I just bought a half gallon of Tropicana Light Orange Juice. They advertise it as having 1/3 less sugar and calories. Has anyone tried it yet? What was your experience? The container says one 8 ounce glass has 17g carb (16g sugar). It also says that it is 60% juice and that it is sweetened with Splenda. I haven't had orange juice since I was diagnosed and I do kind of miss it. Just wondering if anyone else had tried this.

Thanks,

Ann

Ann,

One of the things that I missed terribly early on in my disease was orange juice. But it has been so many years now that I don't miss it anymore. I have tried the diet V8 splash that Cheryl talked about and it is good.

Now to answer your question. I haven't tried this but I have a suggestion. Have 4 ounces which would be about 8 grams of carbs and have some protein with it. Measure your blood sugar two hours after having this and see if you are still in the recommended range (140 or less). If you are then continue to enjoy it. I don't think I would have an 8 ounce glass though, that just might be too much.

Let us know how you do.

Cheers,

Mary Frances

Think its been a while since I mentioned it...but the little bottles of orange juice in the baby food aisle ARE exactly 4 ounces and not sweetened so i think it has i think 13 carbs. One advantage of those little bottles is if you sometimes find it difficult to keep from drinking more than 4 ounces...that is an easy way to get exactly that amount.

I do on occasion drink the minute maid 100% OJ and those are 6.75 ounces. If I have a box, it i count it as my "snack" but the 4 ounces baby food bottles are a quick solution.

The minute maid juice boxes are 23 carbs BUT i only get the 100% juice ones. Watch out for the juice "drink" ones. Those i think have sweetner and lots of empty carbs and calories!

By the way for those who shop where they have Old Orchard juices.....its one of the like store brands price wise. They HAVE come out with a series of low carb juices. I know they had apple juice, i think grape juice, and i think strawberry kiwi or something close to that. Some places have Old Orchard, but not the lo carb ones. One had just the apple juice, but another one had i think 4-5 flavors. That store Also was having a sale on the old orchard juice for $1.99 for a big bottle and i DID notice they did not charge more for the lo carb version!! Usually the low carb mention is accompanied by a HIGHER price. NOt sure if Walmart has old orchard, but i think super target does.

I have not tried them mainly because for one person drinking one of those big bottles seejs like too much for one person. I know from before getting diagnosed buying a big bottle of any juice usually meant i would end up wondering, is it still good or not? But for families it could be fine or if you are used to drinking a lot of juice.

Don't waste your money! "Real" orange juice, unsweetened, is 100% juice and usually has about 30 gms of carbohydrate in 8 ounces. They just diluted the juice and added sweetener...and I bet it costs more than the natural stuff straight from the orange!

Hmmmmmm...Well, I'll have to go do some label-reading. I was wondering about the OJ they've been advertising on tv as being heart smart and low carb. I like the idea of 17g carbs(that's 1 unit for me). I could swing that. However, don't like the idea that it's only 60% OJ.

My message a few minutes ago...sometimes I don't think straight. If I have regular OJ, I usually cut it with half water anyway. Don't know why 60% in the one she was mentioning would be so bad for me. Will have to investigate.

Thanks for your suggestion about the Old Orchard. I've seen it, but not looked at the label. Will have to go on a hunting spree one of these days.

I put some of the baby juices in my fridge. Haven't drank any yet, but am saving them for an emergency I guess. Will have to check the expiration dates. Maybe I could have one with my cottage cheese for my fruit. Yes, they are only 1 unit for me (13 or 14 carbs)...too lazy to go look in the fridge!

My problem with buying regular 32oz or 64oz containers of OJ, is that they go out of date before I get around to drinking them. Am sort of afraid of screwing up the lower BG readings I've been getting.

Thats exactly my problem with large bottles of juice...antually often large containers of mots things. I love the idea of getting things cheaper BUT if you dont use much of it, its not really that cheap!! Also sometimes then it depends what mindset I'm in!!! If I feel frugal, then figure i should eat/drink it so it doesnt spoil!! That is OK as long as its still in the food plan but it can either not be, unbalance the plan, etc!
