What do these numbers mean?

I posted here a month ago because I was having "concerns" that I may be diabetic (many unpleasant symptoms, family history of diabetes, etc). I had to wait nearly a month for a doctor appointment... but I finally went and had the tests done (Blood Glucose and a1c). The doctor wasn't available to explain the test results to me over the phone, but the receptionist was able to give me my "numbers". She also said that I was fine.
Could someone help me interpret these numbers? I am not sure if these numbers are good, bad, or borderline.
After fasting for 20 hours (water only), my results were:
Blood Glucose = 89
a1c (glycohemoglobin?) = 5.4
Is this somewhat borderline? Please help me interpret these numbers - I don't even know what's normal or not because it all seems so foreign to me.
Thanks in advance,
Melissa

I'm not as knowledgable as the others about A1c numbers, but I've heard people say under 6 is ok (I think). I CAN tell you that 89 is a perfectly normal fasting BG number. over 100 is considered 'Impaired Fasting Glucose' or 'pre-diabetes,' meaning that things are starting to not work quite right, but still not diabetic, and certainly not an immediate danger to your health. That number is a little controversial, as it was lowered from 110 just this past October.
Normal fasting is now considered to be 99 or lower. 89 is just fine. :o)
There are lots of reasons for chronic 'unpleasant symptoms'. What symptoms are you having? Have you tried journaling your food, sleep, and symptoms for a couple of weeks? Could help you to identify a pattern that will help you find a starting direction for exploring the causes of your problems.
Good luck!

Listen to Mary Frances...get an appointment with your doctor and have him/her explain all your labs to you. There are other conditions that can cause issues. For now, just go see you doc for the total scoop.
