Ok, I went to my doctors (ob/gyn)last Tuesday and did not see my doctor though, but a new person who I think was the new head nurse for my doctor's office. I was giving her my list of medications when she made a reply about one of them. I am no longer taking pepcid since it is not covered under our insurance so my Endo prescribed Zantac the generic form of it for me at 300 mg a day, which the comment I heard was that is an awful high dose. Is that a high dose? Is it safe at that dose for pregnancy? I did ask the pharmacist about just using it, but not about the dosage I was given so I am a little scared of it since hearing that one comment on it. I have acid reflux in which I need medication to help with that problem. Please do let me know what you can tell me about this medicatiion, because I know that you are great in finding information about such things. Take good care and do have a wonderful day!

Denise,

I looked it up in the PDR for you. Zantac is a Category B drug, which means that it has been tested on mice on a dose 160 times the normal amount for human and no adverse effects occured. Now this doesn't mean that they can't occur but that it is highly unlikely. So the drug is indicated to be used in pregnancy when necessary. (Category C Drugs are not be used in pregnancy and that includes most of our type 2 medications.)

The doseage for acid reflux disease is 150 mgm twice per day or 300 mgm once per day. I don't know what the doctor's personnel was thinking about. She should have looked it up before saying anything. So you are on a normal doseage for what is wrong with you.

On another note, next time please don't use such small type. Even with my trifocals on I could barely read it. Showing my age I guess or perhaps the lateness of the evening!

I am glad you are doing better. I noted you EDD... That is the same day my youngest nephew was born. Good luck with your pregnancy.

Sorry about the sizing of the post. I was trying to make it larger, but I guess I goofed up on it with forgetting to put in size 1 again like I usually do to make it easier on us who don't see so well.

I appreciate the information so very much since I was a little worried about her comment about it. I figured thatshe was not at all thinking so clear since my Endo did prescribe it for me and has never made a mistake with any medications for me along with my pharmacy that I have been with for over 16 years now. I guess she was just not up to date on it or something apparently. Good to know it is a category B drug since I do know that those are safe with unlikely problems with pregnancy. So know I feel so much better about this.

Thank you Mary Frances for being so helpful in my time of need. I will keep you posted on things with me and our surprise pregnancy. LOL Gotta just love surprises since I take it as a good sign that all will be just fine. Good day to be born on. hehe Take good care and do have a very good day!
