Type 1 Doing Atkins for 3 wks
| Fri, 04-30-2004 - 6:15pm |
I am a 32 year old type 1 (4 years since diagnosed) and am 5'6" 148 lbs and trying to lose 25 lbs via the Atkins diet. I have been doing induction for 3 weeks and have not lost 1 lb! Good news is my blood sugar has been low 100's the entire time. I have been in ketosis and doing everything by the book. Has anyone else heard of this or expereinced it? I read about people losing 10lbs or more during the first few weeks.

I was wondering the same thing in regards to Atkins and type 1s.

Hi Janice,
Welcome to the board. Are you really a type 1 diabetic? I asked because you are on so much Lantus. Makes me think that you are a type 2 who's beta cells have stopped functioning. I am now on Lantus also. I take 16 units at this point. I am in a drug trial to determine the doseage for a type 2 diabetic. The FDA hasn't accepted the dosing levels yet. I still make some insulin and so my meals are covered by oral meds. The treatment goal for me is to get my average AM fasting blodo sugar to be 120 or less. I made 128 last week. I had a really nasty low episode this week so they won't be increasing my insulin next week.
Anyway to answer your question, the South Beach diet is similar to Adkins but just not as severe. It is pretty severe the first two weeks and then they add in carbohydrates. I have seen banner ads for it on this board and I think if you googled you could find it. Once again I wouldn't use this diet without your doctor's approval.
