I am a 32 year old type 1 (4 years since diagnosed) and am 5'6" 148 lbs and trying to lose 25 lbs via the Atkins diet. I have been doing induction for 3 weeks and have not lost 1 lb! Good news is my blood sugar has been low 100's the entire time. I have been in ketosis and doing everything by the book. Has anyone else heard of this or expereinced it? I read about people losing 10lbs or more during the first few weeks.

I did a similar diet about a month ago. Dr Phil. Not as strict as Atkins..but still..normal weight loss in the first 2 weeks was suppose to be 8-13 lbs. I lost nothing. I thought I was the only one. I have no idea why and either does my dr. So I can't give you any answers there. I do have a question though. I thought Atkins was considered unsafe for type 1's. My dr actually told me not to do Atkins...and I'm pre diabetic type 2. Hopefully the weight will come off for you soon. I was watching something on T.V...last week about the South Beach diet. They followed this lady who wanted to lose 25 lbs. For the first week she lost nothing. In the second week she lost 8 lbs. They said that for some it takes awhile for the body to respond. If you feel good and your numbers are nice and low..then I'd stick with it and see what happens.

I was wondering the same thing in regards to Atkins and type 1s.

It was my undertanding also that Atkins was contraindicated for type 1's. I would be worried about anything which put you into ketosis. Please check with your physician before going any further. Perhaps a visit to a dietitian would help with some meal planning that would allow you to lose the weight that you want.

In my opinion Adkins isn't too healthy. I belong to another board on diabetes and most of the type ones there just limit carbs but do not do adkins all the way. Everyone NEEDS carbs to live. It is the fuel that makes our brain work. I have about 100-120 carbs a day and I am very controlled. (type2) Just tested a1c at 5.4 and I have also been on Weight Watcher just over 1 yr and lost 98lbs so far. Eating a balanced diet is better thn just eating one thing and nothing of another. Remember this is my opinion.

I asked my dietician about me going on the atkins diet and she said no because i was a type 1 diabetic and atkins was high in fat. She suggested the south beach diet. What is the south beach diet and where can i go on line to get more info?

Hi Janice,

Welcome to the board. Are you really a type 1 diabetic? I asked because you are on so much Lantus. Makes me think that you are a type 2 who's beta cells have stopped functioning. I am now on Lantus also. I take 16 units at this point. I am in a drug trial to determine the doseage for a type 2 diabetic. The FDA hasn't accepted the dosing levels yet. I still make some insulin and so my meals are covered by oral meds. The treatment goal for me is to get my average AM fasting blodo sugar to be 120 or less. I made 128 last week. I had a really nasty low episode this week so they won't be increasing my insulin next week.

Anyway to answer your question, the South Beach diet is similar to Adkins but just not as severe. It is pretty severe the first two weeks and then they add in carbohydrates. I have seen banner ads for it on this board and I think if you googled you could find it. Once again I wouldn't use this diet without your doctor's approval.
