When will I start to feel better?

Maybe I should be more patient but when will I notice a difference in how I feel? I started the metformin last night. Took my first dose with dinner and was very pleased with how great I felt after I ate. Normally, I get tired and foggy and crabby and I want to lay down but get ticked cause I can't cause I have 3 kids and stuff to clean. You get the idea. I actaully forgot till last night how good it feels to feel normal. I waited on the couch for the yuckies to sink in and instead...no yuckies. I felt great, got the laundry done with a smile..chased my 3 year old around the house...was whitty once again. I was amazed at how good I felt and how good it is to feel good. Wierd huh. Today is a totally different story. I took my meds with breakfast which was about 4 hrs ago and I've been fighting sleep ever since. I feel terrible again..I don't want to move..I feel so thirsty and foggy. The yuckies are back. Why? Was last night all in my head? How does the metformin work? I mean I got the printout with the drug so technically I get it. But when do you feel better? Does it need time to build in your system? Does it work right away like I thought it was doing last night? What should I expect? I don't want just an improvement on my glucose meter...I want to feel better. I haven't tested my BG yet, I'm on my way out now to get test strips, medic alert bracelet and glucose tabs..but I can tell by how I feel my number is for sure over 190. I guess your wondering too..well what did she eat. 2 eggs and sausage..I did have half a slice of whole wheat toast with butter under the eggs.

I was so excited last night when I felt so good. Now I feel so bummed.

Any time you introduce new meds into your system, it takes at least a week, but probably closer to two before it starts to really set in.

Trust me when I tell you that it takes 2 weeks for your system to get used to the metformin and then you will begin to see the real changes. Your blood sugar can continue to improve for about 8 weeks before it gets stable. In the meantime if you aren't meeting treatment goals you may have the medication increased. The maximum doseage of metformin is 2000 mgm per day. So be a little more patient. It took you years to become diabetic and will take you a few weeks to get it under control.

Take care and I hope all goes well with you.

Thanks,

It's funny cause I wasn't expecting instant results when I got the script. But when I took the first dose and then ate and then didn't feel awful, I got all excited thinking it was already helping me. I never thought it could be just a tease. LOL Then that is what got me to wondering about how long until I will notice a difference. I never thought to ask my dr that. I will admit though. I'm not nearly as hungry as I was before. It takes about half of what I use to eat to fill me up. I do still get foggy though, but mostly after dinner so that's not so bad. I can't get all stupid at work.
