I need to get my own good meter "have been using hubbies" and was wondering if this is a good one.i like the idea you can check in the arm and not the finger. My husband has a one touch ultra and its great and very fast 5 sec's. I was given a precision Xtra by my doctor but it takes for ever i think 30 sec, and when im feeling bad i need my #;s quicker than that.Just everything about the machine i do not like!

When I was diagnosed I didnt get a meter until after the first diabetic education class and i was a little perturbed since at that point my insurance company had no limits on the brands. I was told they were giving everyone in the class the same prescription because freestyle was the only one either Medicare or medicaid would cover(i dont remember which). When I said since I didnt have that limit, it seemed like I should know a little more first before I picked one...when I got to the pharmacy the freestyle was free with 100 test strips...so i figured the heck with it. if i didnt like it, then the insurance company could pay for the next one. Well, i ended up liking it a lot. My first meter was a dud but they agreed to either ship it to me so i would have it the next day, ship it to my pharmacy(i had taken their last one) or they would make arrangements with another pharmacy. Therasense has been pretty nice to deal with, the blood sample is the smallest size of any meters. The regular freestyle is sorta pokey speedwise. BUT then after I had that meter for about 5 months I was running into a problem with forgetting it at work. that was about the time their freestyle flash came out. So i now have both meters. the flash works a lot faster, same amount of blood, and i think they might have at least a rebate on that meter right now. The flash is quite small, has a light on it, so you can use it in dim light, and the whole case does take very little room. I add some alcohol wipes for when I test at work and to be honest found a "needle case" in the craft dept at Walmart, that I use if I want to change the lancet when I am not home. That little case i think was yarn stitching needles...but is big enough around and fits neatly in the fold of the test kit.

The description of the freestyle flash on their website is it weighs 1.4 ounces, 7 second average test time, has 4 programable daily alarms you can set, and 250 test memory with 2 week average.

They also have a free cable mail in offer with the freestyle flash but its a mail order thing where you have to send in for it, and i think pay a $4.95 shipping charge. but you can either order the software CD or download it free from their web site. I think in addition to the cable they may also still have either a $30-40/rebate. Also the test solution for both meters is free. When you need more you just call them. They then mail it out no charge(they dont charge shipping on that either).

Julie,

I have the Accu Chec Compact and I like it a lot. It uses a very small amount of blood which is wicked into the meter. the strips are in a drum that you insert into the meter. The drum contains 17 tests. You never touch the strips. It also automatically calibrates itself. It is fast.
