Just found out I have Type II Diabetes

Hello: My name is Jenny and I am a 45 yr old woman who lives in Nebraska. I am a mother to 5 kids and 8 grandkids. I thought I could handle anything life threw my way. Well I was wrong. Friday morning I went and took a batch of blood work as I was in the process of changing physicians. I was shocked beyond belief and have cried since hearing that I have Type II Diabetes. I have all kinds of books I can read but when it comes right down to it.....I don't understand what I can and can't eat. How do you keep track of everything you have to keep track of...if you have a busy lifestyle. I know the doctor will tell me a lot of what I need. I guess it's support I am humbly asking for. Thank you for listening to me.

Hi Jenny! Welcome to the board, although I'm sure you wish as much as we all did that we didn't have to start posting here! Do you have a blood glucose meter? If not, you really should get one. Some doctors offices have them to distribute to patients, and some insurance companies will send them to you at no cost. Many meters have rebates as well. If you are able to choose your own meter, I'd recommend going to http://www.epinions.com and reading reviews on meters to decide which would fit your lifestyle best. I am recently diagnosed with Type 2, and I had Gestational Diabetes during my pregnancy. I use the One Touch Ultra by Lifescan, which is
Hi Jenny, I am so sorry to be welcoming you to the board since I know how you really did not want to be diagnosed with diabetes. We have a great group of members here each with their own stories and they are all very helpful if you have any questions that might be on your mind. Go ahead and ask any questions and we will do our best to answer them for you. Just know that you are not alone with this and we are all here for you.

About meters...I just got a accuchek active and love it:)
Eating? Well, for a while you will have to see how certain foods react to you. I know some diabetics who can't eat fruit in the morning, and me it doesn't bother me at all. My suggestion is to read all the labels. Dont' eat any foods with more than 10 sugars, and eat 100-130 carbs a day total. It works for me, just a thought it might work for you. Hope this helps a little. the Joslin site is very helpful.
Oh and if your overweight losing will help. I have lost 100lbs in 14 months. (I follow Weight watchers). When I was rediagnosed my A1c was 11...4 months laer I had it to 6.2 and now it is 5.4:) I feel so much better. My fasting levels are in the normal range for someone without Diabetes. Just telling you all this beacuse diabetes isn't a death sentance...if you take care of yourself and eat right you can live a long healthy life.
Good luck:)
