heat and blood sugars? I have found myself having more and more problems with hypoglycemic reactions since the weather in my area is going up and down. It seems after we get my insulin adjusted just right my blood sugars go nuts again so that we have to do some more adjusting. I feel frustrated about it, but I know all to well it is just something that comes with the territory.
Well, hope your doing better than myself since I seem to be doing badly with lows. Really hoping to find just the right amount of insulin to get me set up once again. At least I will be getting my Paradigm pump traded for the new one, which I cannot wait to use it to see if it will help with me not having so many lows since it has so many more wonderful functions. Take care and do have a super fabulous weekend!

Denise,
The heat seems to make my hot flashes worse also and sometimes it is hard to tell what is making me break out in a cold sweat, hot flashes or hypoglycemia. I was at a meeting the other day and it was warm in the room and suddenly I was breaking out with a cold sweat. I grabbed my meter which was a good thing. My blood sugar was 55. On top of that the heat means that my dehydration is worse also. So I have to make sure I have had enough to drink otherwise I feel like I am going pass out. Isn't it such fun being a diabetic!
I am sure the heat doesn't make you feel wonderful since you are pregnant, not counting being diabetic. But what choice do we have!
Hope you have a relaxed weekend. I am waiting to hear from you next week.
Hugs,
Yes, yesterday was particularly bad. Ran in the 70's all day, and awakened with a 53 at 3AM today. Was kind of shakey and sweating. Rounded up foods that I knew would affect me quickly and it went up to 131. So, tried to go back to sleep.
The heat here has been way over 100 for a couple of weeks. I hate it! Even made it to 113 one day last week.
More later. Hip is still hurting really bad. Am seeing the doctor on Wednesday for the MRI results from Memorial Day. Sure hope it's not anything too serious.
:-)
"Good luck" to us both for some really good news that we both could use. Hoping to hear some great news from you come tomorrow. I'll post as soon as I can about my appointment and include some ultra sound pictures of the little one as well. Have a super great day!
Last week, I experienced an unusually high reading when I tested before lunch, and I am wondering if it could be due to being out in the heat and sun for a couple of hours. I finished breakfast at about 8:45 a.m.. I was on a business trip, so I ate in a restaurant rather than cooking for myself. Had a vegetarian omelette made with egg beaters and a small bagel. I usually don't eat a whole bagel, but I knew I was going to be a lot more active than normal that morning.
After breakfast, I spent the morning doing some photo/video work outside on a very hot, sunny day - a lot of walking around, etc. We quit at about 11:45 and went to lunch. I tested myself at a little after noon, and my blood sugar level was 201. This really surprised me, to the point that I washed my hands and tried again. This time it was 198. I hadn't eaten anything since breakfast - just drank some water and diet coke. I ate a chef salad for lunch, and about 2 hours after lunch, I was down to 136, which is fairly normal for me at this point.
Is it possible the high reading is due to the heat? I know that I will be doing more of this type of work throughout the summer, so the heat will be unavoidable. Is there anything a person can do, other than stay out of the heat? Things like this make me wonder if I shouldn't talk to my doctor about the possibility of medication. We are doing another fasting glucose test this week, and I might see if I can talk to him when I go in.
Thanks in advance for any help!
- Gina
*waving hello at my fellow Nebraskans on the board!*
Hi Gina and welcome to the board. I am one of the community leaders for the board who has been a type 1 for over 29 years and on a insulin pump for over 6 years. From my own personal experience I have only known heat to lower blood sugar. I think what might have happened is that you got low due to all the added activity mixed with the heat, which causes your liver to kick out sugar when you go low since it stores it there. Also if you get stressed it can also cause your blood sugar to go up some so if you were stressed that might be the cause for the high blood sugar.
I hope this helps you out some and that you don't find yourself having more high blood sugars. I know it can be so very frustrating especially with trying to figure out why you had a high level, but just know that we all experience this from time to time so don't get overly worked up over it. Take care and do have a great day!
Hi Gina,
Welcome to the board. I am the other community moderator for this board and I am a type 2 diabetic. The omlet sounded fine but the problem may have been the bagel. Bagels anymore are so huge that a whole one is more than two slices of bread. The other problem may be some dehydration. Do make sure you take some bottled water with you when you are going to be out like this and start drinking before you go out. By the time you feel thirsty dehydration has already set in. When your blood sugar is that high you need to force (drink lots) fluids and eat some protein.
Have you had your A1C done lately? Hopefully your doctor will do one soon and you need the test repeated every three to four months.
good luck and I am so glad that you have joined us.
