is mom a diabetic?

hi everyone,

saw this board and was excited i found a place with "factual information". my mom is 65 years old with a better body than me. (lol) anyhow, over the past few month's she's been dropping weight, and i've noticed she's drinking more and peeing more. She has been to the doctor for labs six months ago but nothing was amiss.

i have a glucometer at home and decided to take her blood sugar. wasn't quite sure if it worked right because initially it said 26, so i had her drink a 1/2 can of coke, later on i went back and checked her (an hour later) and her blood sugar was 125. I guess my question is, what is a normal blood sugar supposed to be at anytime of the day? and are serum blood sugars usually higher than capillary?

her mother and aunt are both diabetics, and recently she has been having episodes of anxiety which is not her nature at all....any help for the ignorant would be greatly appreciated.....

thanks

karen

Hi Karen,

What your mother really needs is a fasting blood sugar test. Anything 100 to 125 would indicate that she is pre-diabetic and about 126 indicates that she has diabetes. She needs to fasting tests above 126 to be diagnosed. With two first degree relatives she may be becoming pre-diabetic. About two months ago the numbers for the pre-diabetes diagnosis were lowered to 100. So it is possible for her to get a report that all was normal when it really wasn't. I would suggest that your mother schedule an appointment with her physician as soon as possible and have her lab work repeated. The goal for a test two hours after eating is 140 or less.

I hope this is helpful. Please get to me and let me know how your mother is doing.

Cheers,

Mary Frances
