I'm Type II -- diagnosed about 2 years ago. Once diagnosed I had a heck of a time bringint this under control. My numbers are usually pretty good, but there's an added problem -- I'm gaining weight like crazy. I'm taking Glucotrol and Avandia and I've told my Doc that I've seen in the literature on Avandia that a side effect can be unexplained weight gain. He said no other patients have that problem and that was the end of the conversation. I've always been overweight (thus the Type II) but I've gained so much weight I can't wear the summer clothes I bought last year. I'm also in menopause which I'm sure is adding to the situation. I can't do too much exercise because of my weight but I do what I can. I diet/don't diet and can't lose -- I keep gaining.
Has anyone experienced this? I'm getting really worried. I did switch doctors but I can't get in to see the new one until August. Any ideas?

Hi Rubystar,
The number one patient complaint with actos and avandia is weight gain but it is supposed to not be the kind of weight gain that makes your diabetes worse. Add in menopause and its weight gain and no wonder you are upset. Actos and Avandia by the way have been found in new research to protect your beta cells and keep them from dying off, which is wonderful if this is finally proven to be correct.
Unfortunately as your get your blood sugar under better control you need to eat less food or you will gain weight. When you see your new doctor in August see if you can get him or her to refer you to a dietitian for meal planning help. Because it is really important that you get your weight as close to normal as you can. Do as much exercise as you can with the eventual goal of 4 hours per week. You need to do no more than walking. Start out slow and build it up as you can.
I wasn't able to go to the gym (Curves) today so I went for a walk with my husband after dinner. I will try and make it to the gym tomorrow. It is sort of nice to go for a walk with my husband as both of us need this and it does give us a chance to talk after our busy days.
So please pull up a chair and join our conversation. You will be amoungst friends and like minded souls.
A hardy welcome,
