Has the weather affected

your blood sugar? I have found that it has mine since we have warmed up tremendously from being on the cool side, which means I have to eat more often to prevent any hypoglycemic reactions from occuring. I find if I eat about every 2 to 3 hours I do much better, but if I don't get something to eat I become hypoglycemic. I guess I just have to eat lots and more protein to keep my blood sugar up in a good range. Oh, the joys of hot weather. LOL Take care and do have a very great day!

Hi Denise!

Well, can't say what caused my mini-catastrophe last Saturday. I think it was dehydration, but the deli guy (was a lab tech for many, many years in Chicago) and another diabetic who eats there occasionally think it was my diabetes.

Glucose was 116 when I went to the deli. Ate my sandwich, drank my tea, and read my book. All of a sudden I got really, really dizzy. Since I spent 2 visits at the hospital in the same week of June 2003, I was sure it was dehydration. Well, I was heading to the restroom when a lady told me I was really, really pale. I was kind of stumbling, too. She noticed my bracelet, and gave me her Pepsi to drink. The deli owner then brought me another Pepsi, something lemon/lime w/o caffeine or carbs and a bottle of water. Started feeling better, and decided to get to the bathroom. Was afraid I was going to have an accident for sure. When I get dehydrated fluids/whatever comes out both ends! Was a good thing!

Sat for a while and then drove home hugging the bottle of water! Took my BS, and it was 360! I've been watching my levels since we've been having temps over 104 daily (several weeks). Anyway, waited about 1/2 hour, took it again, down to about 280 at 5PM. Called the doc on-call. She said to take my meds right then. I'd already dropped the Amaryl to 4mg because of weird readings one day a week at 3AM for 3 wks. She said to take the 500mg Gluco-XR and the Amaryl.

Well, it went down, but it took several hours. Was afraid I was going to get in trouble again during the night so packed my book, glasses, some clothes to come home in and my meter in a bag in case I had to go visit my friends at the hospital. Think I stayed up until 3AM just to make sure I wasn't going to flake out again.

Have been drinking lots of fluids and trying to stay in the house as much as possible. Try to water my plants after I give my diabetic cats their food and shots at 5AM before it gets too hot.

So...yep...I do believe that the heat affects my levels.

Long story...sorry

Kathi

Oh Kathi - What a scarey experience. I have had hypo episodes and those are scarey enough for me but at least they are easier to rectify I can't imagine how frightneing that must have been. But it sounds like you handled it well and kudos to the people who helped you out.

Let us know what your doctor says. As for me I have not noticed much difference in my levels as the weather gets warmer but so far warmer her has not been above 85. I am sure it will warm up soon and then we will see!

Oh my goodness, what a horrible experience you must have had, Kathi. {{hugs}}

I live in a Northern climate and we are just starting to get hot weather here. Maybe I'll start carrying a water bottle in my car. The humidity has always bothered me a little. Now as a diabetic it may affect us more-so. Thanks for the information. My Dr did say to drink more water, but I had no idea it could be so important.

No changes for me. Mine has more to do with stress and what I eat than the heat. I am off work for the summer, and eating only when I am hungry. My bs stays between 108-140. I am a type 2 and only on meds. so that might have something to do with it. I am trying to choke down more water, since I have been on metformin, it is hard to drink anything! I had my Ha1c on Thurs. and they called and said it was Great...will find out the exact numbers on Thurs. at dr. appt. surely it is at 5.5 or below, since my bs is not over 140! I am hoping they will drop the amount of metformin I have to take, b/c it makes me feel sick, gassy, etc. I stay inside with the A/c going- I live in Florida and it has been over 95 degrees everyday. If I have to go out, I go in the evening if I can. We are walking at 7:30 pm before dusk and it is okay, except if it is after the rain- it is very humid and makes me feel worse. MH

Oh no Kathi, that is not at all good. Your starting to sound like me since I use to have so many hypoglycemic reactions that I started to know the paramedics by name, which I have to say that there is nothing worse than waking up to a room full of people you don't know. Now you start drinking lots of water so that you do not become dehydrated ever again. Also start checking your blood sugar more often especially to prevent things like this from happening. I eat several small meals these days to keep from having so many lows, which has helped out so much. At least I have not had anymore passing out episodes. (knock on wood)

Do take care and do all you can to keep from having problems, but I know you do that since having trouble is not at all fun. Also keep me posted on things with you, because I sure miss all your posting you use to do although I know that things get busy at times. Have a super enjoyable 4th of July.

Denise~

Saw my endo today, and he & the NP both said that hot weather makes the glucose readings higher. So, guess you & I were correct!

Still can't figure out what's causing my dizziness and feeling of faintness. It happened again as I was getting out of my car at their office today. They took my level, and it was 85 which is fine. I was really confused, too. I still think I'm having problems with dehydration. He said that he didn't think so.

He wants me to see an ENT and gave me a prescription for meds for vertigo. What a mess!

I am so glad to hear that you went to your doctors. Now when I feel dizzy and faint I know it is generally due to my needing to eat something such as a light snack to get me feeling better. Is it possible that your blood sugar has been running on the higher side so that when you are in the 80's you feel dizzy and faint? I know that if your blood sugar
