from hypo to hyper - managing it ALL day

Sorry to inturrupt yuor 4th of July partying.........but I could use a hug and some thoughts please......

Blah what a day. I got up went for my walk, grabbed my coffee with Splenda while walking. Came home, had a  low carb eng muffin with cream cheese (usually do PB) and took my meds (4 mg avandia, 5 mg glyburide)...2 hours later I felt hypo took my readings 59 (this was around 1:30).

Hubbie made me a low carb grilled cheese with about 12 pretzles. An hour (2:30) later it was only up to 69, so I had about another 20 g of carbs (probably too much here). Another hour later (3:30) I was at 228! What the ***. Could it be the heat? I am guessing I am adjusting to the glyburide and maybe I need to eat differently more smaller amounts more frequently than on the Amaryl - which I swear did nothing for me. Would have been nice if my doc told me this.

Anyway it is 6:27 now and I just came back from a walk and I am back at 107. Of course it is time for me to take the glyburide again and eat. Hmm how to balance those two?

I jsut looke dup the "kick in" time for glyburide and the 10th Edition of The Pill Book says it is  starts working in 2-4 hours and lasts 24 hours. Hmmm. So maybe if I take it now... make my dinner and eat it I won't be too low by then...then it will kick in after dinner.

Can't I just eat? ---- trying really hard not to let this get to me today or not to just say **** it and eat what I want.

Hi Michelle, Sorry to hear you're having a rough day, hope you're feeling better now. I've had a few hypo episodes, it's pretty scary. My CDE recommended taking 4oz of juice or regular soda (she said liquid acts faster than solids), test again after 15 minutes; if BS hasn't risen enough treat again with 4oz of juice and retest in 15 minutes. If after repeating the process three times (if necessary) and BS isn't in my acceptable range than I have been instructed to go to the ER. Thankfully I have only had to repeat the process twice before my BS rebounded, I've not experienced the hyper though. Have you tried liquids to raise your BS? Jan

Big {{{HUGS}}} coming your way. I am so sorry you had such a rough day with blood sugars. I can tell you that it is to be expected to have a high blood sugar after having a low one, because your liver will kick out sugar to keep you going. It is frustrating for sure, but it might have something to do with your eating low carb things since they contain less carbs with more calories. Have you thought about trying non low carb foods to see if that helps solve some of this problem since as a diabetic we all need carbs to keep our blood sugars from going low along with protein. It sounds like to me that you don't eat much for breakfast, which I have no idea if this is how your meal

Thanks guys for all the encouragement. I was feeling emotionally crappy yesterday. I went to bed with BS levels of 88, it took me awhile to fall asleep bc I was afraid of it going too low but at 3:30 I was still at 83 and this morningmy fasting level was 113....how that happens -- going up by 20 points -- is beyond me. But I am much happier where it is so far today.

I am off to have a good breakfast. Will keep you all posted and will call the doctor tomorrow (today being the holiday and all!).

Seriously thanks I would be nuts without you all.

Hi Michelle,

This wasn't a fun way to celebrate the holiday was it?

How many carbs were you told to eat at each of your meals? It would seem to me that you didn't have enough carbs after your walk and that is the reason your blood sugar dropped so much. When your blood sugar drops like that you need to eat some carbs. Usually you are told to have 15-20 grams of carbohydrates. And of course you need some protein to keep you from yo-yoing your blood sugar. Any form of carbohydrate will raise the blood sugar but the suggested ones are glucose tablets, candy, soda, juice and milk. I have never tried the glucose tablets but my doctor tells me they taste terrible and therefore you are less likely to over indulge in them. I find that 4-8 ounces of milk works just fine. (8 ounces of milk has 15 grams of carbohydrates).
