I am back, need help

Hi everyone, It's been almost a year since I was here. I've done everything I can to not deal with this health issue, but it is now starring me full in the face. I've started seeing a new doctor who is really trying to help me...she has even offered me a part-time job in her office which I need...an answer to a prayer...and I have no experience in the medical field. So I want to work with her...that's a first...to help control this disease and to help me feel better. My first visit with her was very hectic...for good reasons...and now she's out of town for a couple of weeks. But she mentioned something about a "modified Atkins diet" being very good for controlling the blood surgar. I've done some looking, but are any of you familiar with this type of food plan? Can you recommend sources where I might research and learn. Ivillage is the first place I thought to come when my search didn't really help. So thank you all in advance for your input. I suffer from long time depression, am obese, not a spring chicken in the age dept, so I have decided to finally start taking care of me. I want something practical that I can live with on a daily basis, not some fad short term fix. I also have a blood monitor that I am learning to use. Again, any little suggestions would be of immense value. i.e., the doctor talked of eating "all day" to keep the blood sugar level??

So I await the words of wisdom from all. God bless...

Hey Star, welcome back -

As far as an actual "modified Atkins plan", I don't think there's an official one, but what she is probably referring to is a low carb, low fat diet.

Welcome back Star! Great to have you back and joining us. I really think that seeing a nutritionist will help you out with the Atkins plan since they are trained in that area and should know about it as well. I know what your doctor means by a modified Atkin's plan since it is better to not go without some foods in your diet. So maybe find yourself and nutritionist if you do not have one yet They generally have great sets of plans to go by and well worth any efforts we can come up with. Take care and have a super wonderful Friday!

Hi Star,

Welcome back! We are glad to see you and wish you had better news for us.

I think your doctor is referring to the South Beach diet which is a gentler version of the Atkins diet and allows more vegetables and is lower fat.

I would really suggest that you be referred to a dietitian to develop an eating plan that is tailored to your food likes, desires and eating style. That was you can follow the eating plan for the rest of your life. Although you will need periodic tune-ups depending upon the progression of your disease. Remember you didn't gain the weight overnight and you aren't going to lose it that way either. Plus that as a diabetic rapid weight loss can be a health issue.

Whenever you start taking care of yourself it is a great day! Even non-spring chicken can get their bodies moving. Its just that you can't get it moving like a 20 year old! What is important is that you get it moving and walking is a nice way to start. You live in a pretty section of California and so start slowly but start. We will be here rooting for you.

So please let us know how you are doing. The cheer leaders are here waiting to lead the cheers.
