Need Some Help

I am not sure if this is where I should be asking but I am gonna take a chance anyway. My son who is 36 years old has been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and he has been having awful problems keeping his blood sugar under control. His numbers can spike and dive all in one day. He just got out of the hospital last week after having passed out at home and they put him on Amaryl or something like that. And they told him about learning to eat right etc. He said when he was there they told him that his breakfast should be something like 4 points and his lunch 5 points and then dinner 4 points. He has no idea where they get the point thing from and is getting very frustrated. A dietician was supposed to come in and talk to him but never showed up. They talked to him about taking classes to learn the right way to eat etc but they want almost $100 an hour for the class and right now money is so tight that they can't afford it. So I was wondering if anyone here knew anything about what I wrote here and maybe can help out with any thing at all. I am eager to learn. Thanks in advance.

I'd be on the rope right along side you because the classes and dietician didn't teach me anything I hadn't learned on my own. I bought two books right after diagnosis, Type 2 Diabetes- The First Year and

Denise,

Thanks for giving me the sample meal plan. I hate to ask this but could you possible give me an idea of what items you eat for each of those meals and snacks? I sent your sample meal plan to my son and he said it helps but he would like to know what people are actually eating for those meals and that it might give him a better idea. He sounds in much better spirits today and I hope that things are starting to get better for him. I would appreciate your help if you would. Thanks.

Denise, I am sure you must add some fruits and veggies in there. Also do you subtract the fiber off the carbs when it is more than 5 grams? Fruits of course count as carbs but veggies don't count until you get more than 3 servings per meal.

Any good diabetic cookbook and probably Diabetes for Dummies has a listing of diabetic servings. So that is really where they need to start. I agree that diabetic education is the key. I personally don't like the big group education sessions that some educators use. I think smaller sessions work better and I also hope that when people see a dietitian that they see one who specializes in diabetes and that they get a special meal plan worked out for them. I just had another appointment at my request with the dietitian. It was really a big help and I now have a new eating plan that I am trying to follow. I am doing pretty well with my new eating plan and not having the severe lows that I was having before.

Can you beleive that we have had more than 13,000 messages on the board! We should celebrate!

Well, I am one of those who does lots of the free veggies of eating servings of fresh carrot sticks and salads. Of course I do get my fruit and veggies in daily so do not go by what I put down for a meal plan quickly. I did forget some veggies and fruits in there in which I figured out a bit later. I do not go without my fruits or vegetables since I am kind of addicted to both of them and even more so while pregnant. I'll fix the meal plan I put up though.

He really does need to start by seeing somebody about his own meal plans such as a good dietician who can help set one up for him specifically especially since we all have different life styles not to mention activities in a given day. I just am going by what I usually do for my meals, but of course I know I can always take a carb out of one meal and put it at another depending on how my day is going or amount of activity I have had. We both know that we know more about what to do so this is basically just some help to get him started.

Well, I am not on the 1800 calorie diet at this moment either since I am doing a 2200 calorie meal plan with being pregnant, which if I do not start to gain more I will be adding more calories and have no idea how I am going to eat all of it. LOL At least I don't have many lows at all anymore with the new pump with the wizard calculator it has, which has been the biggest help of all along with keeping in touch with my CDE who calls to check up on me.

I am so very thrilled about the 13,000 messages. We should celebrate since that is such a great thing! Yay, to us both for having so many messages posted!
