for keeping your blood sugar up when it is extremely hot outside? Where I live we do not get such hot temps, but for the next few days it will be getting close to 100 with Friday having a chance to hit that and slightly above. So I want to make sure I have things to help keep my blood sugar up in the way of foods that are good with helping to do that and I know protein does this only I am on a low protein meal plan though. I appreciate any suggestions you can offer me here since I have never come across heat like this before. Take care and have a terrific day!

Denise,

I don't know the answer but I asked the diabetic educator about this today when she called me about my appointment. I have had a really miserable week with losing my blood sugar three out of four days. I had eaten my normal breakfast on Saturday and then suddenly I had a 54. The only difference was that it was hot around here. She told me that diabetics taking insulin seem to have more trouble keeping their blood sugars up when it is hot. I see the dietitian again on Monday and maybe she will have an answer.

Incidentally I finish the insulin trial on Monday. HOORAY!! I will remain on the insulin. They will probably lower my insulin doseage to to 20 units from 22 as it seems a little bit too much. I was feeling pretty confident that the worse of adjusting to taking insulin was over and then this week occurred. Sat, Sun and Tuesday I had episodes of hypoglycemia. On Saturday when I had the 54 I couldn't even myself a sandwich. My husband finally had to make my sandwich for me. It was a good thing that he was home. I haven't been able to exercise as much this week either between the pain in my knee and the low blood sugars. Well, I guess I had better quit whinning!

Take care and try and stay comfortable as possible in the heat.

Denise~

Topic revisited. We spoke about the heat a while ago. I asked the PA, and she said it can go either way...affect the BS by going up or down. Well, today I discovered the heat along with my temper flare (stress over stupidity of the MA's in my endo's office)and the food I ate...gave me a whammy! I went up to just over 250 when it was 105 before all the crap started! So, I added another 2mg of the Amaryl and it's back down where it should be now.

We had hail about the size of dollar coins and lots of rain about 6PM. It sounded terrible landing against my garage door and roof. Sure hope there's no damage. Hopefully it'll be cooler in the morning. This 100+ up to 116 degrees is the pits. We've gotten dust storms this year, but not much rain. Today was the first day of actual rain for my part of the valley. The east side (Tempe, Chandler, Awatukee, some Scottsdale) have gotten rain along with the dust storms. I've just had brown grass and plants wilting and dying. Only another 2.5 months of this crap and it should cool down some. At least I hope so.

Be sure to keep yourself well hydrated. That should keep the BS close to normal for you. At least it seems to work for me. Discovered iced tea isn't very good for me, though, as it was told to me that it dehydrates me if it's not decaffinated.
