According to Diabetes Management mag. thiazide can increase cholesterol, and increase glucose. My gp prescribed hctz for me to control my bp and my glucose a1c has steadily risen from 5.2 to 7.1. The mag stated that diabetics are usually not prescribed this direutic. Has anyone else had this problem? He also increase the dosage from 25mg to 50 mgs.

In spite of my strict diet of high fiber low fat, and intense exercise, my cholesterol and glucose are rising rapidly. After reading the article, i've decided to stop the hctz or split the pill to 12.5mgs. I am on verapamil 240, and avapro 150 mgs. Hopefully, this will lower my bp and stop the glucose from climbing.

Hi there -

Call your Dr. and see if you can get a referral to an endocrinologist.

Hi and welcome to the board. My name is Mary Frances and I am one of the community leaders for this board. I am a registered nurse and a type 2 diabetic. Any advise I may give is not a substitute for seeking medical advise from a health care practitioner of your choice.

Your doctor owes you an explanation of why he prescribed the hydrochlorthiazide for you. Please don't stop the drug until you talk to him as there can be bad consequences.

What meds are you on for your diabetes and your cholesterol? I see that you are on medical nutritional therapy but you need more than that for your metabolic syndrome. The current recommendation as I am sure you are aware from your reading is to get all your weight, cholesterol and blood pressure as close to normal as possible. For most people diet alone won't do this and medication is needed.

I am so glad you chose to join us. We like people who take responsibility for their disease. Please let us know what your docotr has to say and if you aren't satisfied do ask for a referral to an internist or an endocrinologist. Unfortunately there aren't enough endos to go around and if you don't have complications an internist should be able to manage your disease with you. So please let us know what happens.

A hardy welcome!

Thank you for the welcome. I've visited this board b4 and find it quite interesting. I usually post on the hbp & cholesterol board. I do see an endo and have been for at least 3 yrs now. I would not trust a reg gp or nurse to help me with my many illnesses. I feel that's why im in this mess.

i read alot of medical magazine to get tips on how to better live with my disease. i've changed my diet to high fiber low fat since last Nov. 03. I've lost 65 pounds by lifestyle changes which includes 6 miles walks per day.

Not only did my glucose level rise, but my cholesterol jumped as well. Um so frustrated. I can't stop the thiazide bcuz it does help my bp. Im in the process of joining a diabetes study being conducted in upstate NY at a local hospital. Hopefully, things will work out ok. Thank you for your advice.
