Please ..for those that have this Tx. down for Diabetes..please help. I had GD with my 1st pregnancy in 94 and was on 350 units of insulin a day. 2 years after delivery I was DX. with Type 2 and was placed on Metformin..did very well ..then got pregnant with 2nd child in 99 and all went down hill. I have been on Humolog for the past 2 years..about 2-30 untis before a meal.. Just saw a new ENDO. MD this week and he felt that I should get off the Humolog because my BS'a are all over the board from a low of 35 to a high of 340.. to many up and downs..He placed me back on Metformin 500mg 2x a day..every since I have been on it I have had cramping and diaherrea all day long for the past week. I read that it sometimes takes a while to get adjusted... Has anyone experienced these problems with Rx. medformin and Tx. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks

Hi and welcome to the board. It takes about 2 weeks for your system to get used to the metformin. Probably you started on too high a doseage. It also takes about 8 weeks before you see the total effect of the metformin on your blood sugar. Ask your doctor if a basal insulin will help you. I do hpe that you are testing your blood sugar at least four times per day in this transition period. You can't take metformin when you are pregnant because it's effects haven't been tested on developing babies.

I was surprised when my endo increased my metformin last October and I felt sickly for the first two weeks. I had been on the metformin for several years at that point. So hang in there, it will get better. Do make sure you have food in your stomach before you take the metformin.

I certainly hope that you are feeling better real soon.

A gentle hug,

Mary Frances
