How to get to 10,000 steps

As some of you know I have been wearing a pedometer and trying to increase the number of steps I do per day. Tonight I was reading a Kraft food magazine and they had a simply way to get to the magic number.
Everyday write down how many steps you took that day. At the end of the week add up the number and set a new goal for the next week by increasing your target by 2000 steps.
As Cheryl said, you do have to be careful about where you place the pedometer as it can undercount your steps drastically. I haven't felt that it ever over counted them either. I am not sure if a more expensive pedometer has the same problems counting as the really inexpensive one I have. I wasn't relishing spending my money to find out either!
What do you think of this way of increasing your physical activity?

Mary Frances...
Hi Cheryl,
I actually was given two of them. I dropped the first a number of times and I don't it registers much of anything! I guess I need a leash, if it would keep me from dropping the dern thing! So I have been wearing the second one. I seem to get better readings with it. I was thinking of getting a more expensive one and the ADA does have one on its website. I do find that even if the thing isn't accurate it does make me aware that I need to get moving more. I did count how many steps it took me to walk to the mail box and then look and see if it registered anywhere near the correct number of steps. I like you also found that I needed to be careful where I placed it on my hip or it wouldn't register anything.
My problem is that I live in a small town that doesn't have much shopping it in and I have so been so busy I haven't been able to go the next larger town to go looking at say a sporting goods store. I may try to purchase the one from the ADA over the web.

I just bought a pedometer this week, too. I wore it for 3 days, and it was fun to see if I got to 10,000 steps. Sometimes the dumb thing reset itself--grrr--and it did fall off while I was shopping, but it is a motivator for me to see those steps tick off.
I bought mine at the REI website. It was about $25 and was rated by the Wall Street Journal as a very reliable and accurate machine.
