Hello, I need to lose quite a bit of weight and want to count carbs and just been told I have diabetes 2, is their any type of formula that a person can do to stay under a certain amount of carbs and still lose? Thank You (I was on the Atkins last year)

Hi Birdlover,

I am also a type 2 diabetic and a carb counter. I met with a dietitian and she developed a meal plan for me. I am allowed 30 grams of carbs for breakfast, 45 for lunch and dinner and 15 for my bedtime snack. I find this quite easy. I know the carb amount of certain foods, ie. milk, bread, pasta, rice, etc. and so I can normalize my eating. I was shocked at how much I had limited my diet before I started counting carbs. I have lost 3 pounds since I started. It would be nice if I could lose some more and if I could increase my exercise I probaably would lose more weight. I have been exercising and I have been losing inches. Of course muscles weight more than fat.

So I suggest that you visit a dietitian and get a special meal plan suited just to your needs. I hope this answers your question. I am really pleased at how easy carb counting is and how it has liberalized my eating.

Hello MaryFrancis, thank you for answering me, I was just told I have Type 2 and learning all I can, I am not on medication yet just diet and exercise and see if I can keep it in check so to speak. What makes it hard for me with the low carb(started with Atkins) is that I`m a vegetarian and do not eat meat which narrows the field quite a bit so........that`s about where I am. Patty

Hi Mary Frances,

Congratulations on your weight and inches lost...keep up the good work! I am so happy to read that your meal plan is working for you, it's pretty amazing isn't it?! I will be meeting with my dietician again next month to tweak my meal plan in hopes of dropping a few more pounds. I could probably do it myself but I decided working with my medical team is the smart way to go so they can determine if any other changes should be made.

Congrats again!

Hi birdlover,

I can understand your concern. I have tried to eat vegetarian meals because of my cholesterol and I can't keep my blood sugar under control. I don't get enough protein to moderate my carb intake. I hope you will talk with a dietitian because there are diabetic recipes for vegetarians and there certainly must be diabetic vegetarians.

Please let me know what you find out. I am sure others will be interested also.

Check out this link. I would think any vegetarian recipe (nearly all) would be good for diabetics.
