I'm trying to find things I can safely have for late night desserts.

Last night I had sugar free pudding but my fbs this am was 110 - so that's not so good.

Any words of wisdom for me? Am I crazy to think there are any sweets I can eat???

HELP!

Maybe try speaking to a dietician to see about doing some switching of your meal plan, but the 110 isn't really bad at all. You could also try having something like sugar free pudding between lucn and dinner for a snack. You could also try doing some excercising after having something sweet to see if that helps with your fasting blood sugar any at all. Also try checking out your favorite grocery store to look at labels to see what you can find that is lower in carbs in something you like to have as a sweet treat since

Heather,

I am of two minds about this. First off, congratulations on the 110. That is really an excellent blood sugar to have in the morning.

The other mind!

Just because something says it is sugar free doesn't mean that it is carbohydrate free. Look at the carton the item came in. At bedtime you really shouldn't be having something that has more than 15 grams of carbs in it. I also don't like to eat things which have a lot of carbs from sugar because even though all carbs will raise your blood sugar the same amount, sugar and other simple carbs will raise it quickly and allow it to drop quickly. If there is 5 or more grams of fiber in a food item, you substract the fiber from the carbs and that gives you an effective carb measurement. This is because fiber will raise your blood sugar. So look at the packageing and get back to me with the carb count and we can see where to go from here.

Thanks Mary Frances,

This is just so frustrating for me! I've been a low carb diet for years and years and years. But I'm having to learn a whole new set of rules now.

Soooo, to answer your question. The carb count on the pudding is 7. 1 for fiber. I use 2 cups of 2% milk for the entire package (so divide by four for serving amount) Carbs in milk are 12/cup. So 24 carbs total divided by four = 6. Giving a total of 12 carbs per serving of sugar free pudding.

That's probably just too many right before bed.

Has anyone used the Atkins diet ice cream? Before bed? (Meaning NOOO exercising happening afterwards LOL)

Thanks for all of your help.

Hi! Many diabetics are to have a bedtime snack consisting of 15-30 carbs, balanced with proteins. I usually have a container of Blue Bunny LIte 85 or Yoplait Ultra before bed to keep my sugars in control thru the night and into the morning. Depending on your carb counts throughout the rest of the day and your sugar levels, you may or may not need a bedtime snack. My MIL is diabetic and doesn't eat a bedtime snack because it usually reflects badly on her am draw.

That should be an absolutely wonderful for a bedtime snack. It appears to have enough protein to support the amount of carbs abd the carbs aren't unreasonable. Do test your blood sugar before bedtime. Your doctor should have told you what the target goal was but if s/he didn't, you don't want to go to bed with a blood sugar lower than 110 and hopefully not higher than 140. Frankly when my blood sugar is 140 or above I just have some protein (1 ounce) and no carbs. If you have ice cream, you need to eat low-fat no sugar ice cream. 1/2 cup will equal 15 carbs and if you add 1/4 cup of nuts to that you ahve enough protein. Try it, I find it yummy!

See you in two weeks,

Mary Frances

What's wrong with being 110? That sounds like a good number to me.

I just noticed that Cool Whip Free has more carbs than regular Cool Whip (2 gms /serving vs 3 gms; the "Free" has no fat, while the regular has about 3 gms. Hardly worth bothering about, eh?
