severe itching a diabetes symptom?

Hello~ I'm making an app't. with my dr., but had some concern with a recent bout of severe itching. I had it checked at a clininc, and the PA thought it may be a soap reaction, and put me on mild steroids for one week, plus a low dose steroid cream. I should add that I have a family history of diabetes on my mom's side, and have many of the usual symptoms as others on this board.

Although I can finally sleep through the night without having to scratch, I'm curious if anyone else here has had this happen. I checked the skin conditions board, and initially thought I had pityriasis rosacea(body type vs. facial), but then again, it could be similar in it's description. My little red rash goes between my neck and ankles, but has been better due to meds. Thanks for any comments. I've had this for at least a week now. J.

I have partially answered my own question- found that all over body itching was listed as a symptom for diabetes. If anyone else has experienced this or knows the reason that it happens, please advise. Thanks, J.

Hi rahrahmom -

I don't remember itching being a symptom of diabetes, but I do know it is definitely a symptom of underactive thyroid (aka Hashimoto's disease) as are hair loss and sleep problems.

I do know that vaginal itching is a common symptom of diabetes. An itch that can get so bad, but many doctors miss it and can't diagnose it.

I've had many other symptoms and just found out about the vaginal itching which is what I've had for over a year now. It never dawned on my that I could be diabetic, but the symptoms that I have all point in that direction.
