I probably just need to be patient and wait for test results, but I can't get this off my mind and I wondered if any of you would be able to help me. Here's the thing......I had a fasting blood glucose test done last week (Dr ordered the test because I have had recurrent vaginal thrush for a few months)and my dr told me this morning that it indicates I have diabetes. Apparently the normal level is between 3 nad 6 and mine was 8.I am having a 2hr glucose tolerance test tomorrow for confirmation. My dr made it sound like it was a forgone conclusion, but could the first test be misleading? Is there hope that it is wrong? Or could it be early stages and with a healthy diet and weight loss I could go back to normal? Is that even a possibility?Yes I am overweight (about 25-30 kilos) and there is a strong family history of late onset diabetes. I am 35.I have also had trouble with my vision for the past couple of months. It is very blurry and hard to focus. I saw an optometrist last week and I do have a progressive eye disease so it could be that or could it be diabetes? I am very worried and scared. My Nana died from the complications caused by diabetes.
Thanks for any help you can give.
Lisa.

Hi and welcome to the board.
Thanks for your reply. I had a look at the website you suggested and it was very helpful. I have my 2hr glucose tolerance test this morning and a follow-up appt with my dr tomorrow afternoon.

Your fasting blood sugar level is slightly elevated, but not super bad at all. As for the glucose tolerance test some do pass it with no problems at all and some do not. So basically you just have to wait to see what the results from that test show, because there is no sense in getting yourself all worked up over this if there is nothing to worry about. It sounds like to me that you might may just need to eat right and get lots of excercise, but also try to get your weight in a good range since that does help so many out. The only way to know for sure though is to wait for the test results to come back. If it runs in your family your chances is higher due to that reason, but it does not mean you will become diabetic since it can skip a generation or just miss you completely.
Do not fear we are all here for you to give the support and encouragement we all need at times. We all know how scary it can be, but your not alone at all. Post questions if you have more of them since I know somebody will be able to help answer them or give a great web link to an answer. Also do let us know how your 3 hour glucose test goes, because I sure would love to know what you get for a result. Remember your fasting number is not very bad at all so do not panic just yet, because you may just pass the glucose test with flying colors. Take care of yourself and do make sure to let us all know what happens with the test. Have a super fabulous day!
