Update on me.....

I first posted here the other day after my dr suspected I had type 2 diabetes after a high FBG. I had the 2 hr glucose tolerance test and a few other blood tests yesterday and saw my dr for the results this afternoon. The tests confirm that I have diabetes. My FBG was 8 again and after the 2 hr GTT it was 12.6. So not great I'm told, but it could be worse. Dr has referred me to an eye specialist and a diabetes specialist and wants me to be seen within the next couple of weeks. He said he would leave the question of home monitoring and medication to the specialist, but he was hopeful that exercise and diet might be adequate. He has given me some guidelines for my diet to follow in the meantime.I'm not sure how I feel about all this at the moment. My head is spinning.I've seen what can happen to a diabetic who doesn't look after themselves and it scares me. I just hope I can do this.So I hope you don't mind, but I think I will be visiting here quite a bit no doubt with lots of questions.

Thanks for listening,

Lisa.

Hay Lisa,

This is Mary Frances and I am back from my trip. Welcome on board. As I just read your most recent posting it struck me that you are a third generation diabetic: your grandparents, your father and now you. There is too much heritage there to miss that bullet regardless of how much you weighted. We all beat ourselves up periodically with what ifs. Sometimes we call it having a pitty party around here. So we whine and snivel and then we pick ourselves us and get moving in the right direction. It is tough having a chronic disease but it is easier if we take control of it.

I hope the dietitian teaches you how to carb count as this really opens the world up for you. You will learn how to read labels and how to make choices. Sometimes you will make the wrong choice but that is life! We all do it, not one of us is always perfect.

I have just returned from my trip to Europe and I must tell you it certainly is more difficult when the labels on the foods don't tell you much. I have learned what sugar is in several languages!! Zuckar in Italian is sugar (or maybe it was German!). There I had to make sure the sugar was in the 4th place or higher. In Spain I even found a special department in the grocery store with diabetic products. There certainly were a lot of low sugar jams and jellies available. I was looking for some peanut butter. I had a really difficult time getting my bedtime snacks on the ship. They always had pizza and pasta available and diet ice cream but peanuts were the only nuts available and there weren't any crackers available. My bedtime snack can consist of 15 grams of crackers (I especailly like rye crisp.) and 1 ounce of protein, such as cheese or 1 tbsp of peanut butter. I can also have 1/2 cup of low fat ice cream with 1/4 cup of nuts. Now that really tastes good, especially when I can have my sliced almonds.

So please ask your questions and post your comments. We are here to help and support you as much as we are able.

A gentle hug,

Mary Frances
