hi, remember me? i posted here a wk or so ago about my grandfather testing my BS and it being "high". well i had my dr. appt this afternoon. they took my blood. it was a "fasting" blood sugar test. my dr. asked me to come in of a morning for 3 hrs for a glucose tolerance test. he thinks that i have hypoglocemic symptoms, but with high blood sugar at times. what the heck do you call THAT? diabetes or NOT?

i'm so confused! anyone??

Hi Kristie,

Technically, yes, there is a difference between insulin resitance and diabetes. 97 percent of type 2 diabetics have insulin resistance. Insulin resistance starts years before you become diabetic. It is what does the initial damage to the cells in your eyes, feet and kidneys. Insulin resistance is one of the differences between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. It isn't found in type 1 diabetes. It is also what causes the type 2 diabetic to need lots of medication to control their blood sugar. But strickly as a diagnosis, I haven't heard of it. I think a more accurate diagnosis would be pre-diabetic. Insulin resistance in the pre-diabetic is treated with metformin. It is possible to measure insulin secretion and depending upon the amount being produced determine if the person has insulin resistance.

The diagnosis of type 2 diabetes is two fasting blood glucose readings of 126 or more. Pre-diabetes is between 110 to 125. Glucose tolerance tests are used in pregnancy and in diagnosising hypoglycemia. Otherwise they are cruel and unusual punishment for a diabetic. a more common test for a diabetic is 100
