high glucose

Hello, I just had a drs appoiintent and my dr had the results of the bloodwork she did a week ago. She was concerned about my glucose level- 170! She did admit I am supposed to fast before one of these, which I hadn't, so she took it again and it was 107. She said that was still high and we needed to monitor it. My sister has high glucose, but eats very healthy and runs, so she has been able to keep it down. My mother is diabetic.

I know I am at risk as well, so is anyone in my shoes, and what are some good things to incorporate into my lifestyle to keep this down? I work out 3-4 times a week, but I haven't been eating well. I am currently incorporating low calorie, low sugar foods into my diet. Any ideas? Very much appreciated, Cam

Hi Cam,

What the doctor saw is called pre-diabetes. What needs to happen now is for you to get your weight as close to normal as possible and to get more exercise. You may need to exercise every day. The ADA has an exercise program promotong 10,000 steps per day. You need a pedometer and every step you take from the time you get up until you go to bed counts. Oviously the goal is to get your body moving! It is kindof fun. I have been wearing a pedometer for several months now. I don't often make the goal of 10,000 steps (I did on my vacation but not since I got home) but I am aware of how active I am or not and I am trying to be more active.

Food suggestions would be to increase the amount of vegetables that you eat and eat your fruits, don't drink them, drop the sugary pop from your diet, watch how many fried foods you eat and try to eat whole grains, not all the white carbos because they make your blood sugar rise as quickly as sugar.

I hope this helpful,

Mary Frances
