A little nervous

Hi,

I am 23-years-old and have thyroid problems (hypothyroid) and my endocrinologist on Friday drew a blood sample to test my glucose because I have some of the symptoms of being diabetic (like being really tired and really thirsty).

I did not fast or anything, though. I had lunch about an hour or an hour and a half before the blood was drawn. Is this correct? I have been reading about tests to see if one has diabetes and a lot of them mention fasting for 12 hours or so. If I would have known this before the blood was drawn, I would not have eaten that day.

I am worried I may have diabetes, but am kind of relieved because that would explain why my body feels the way it does (exhausted, etc). I am afraid the blood test will not show accurate results because I did not fast.

Any advice?

Hi Flora -

I'm going to take a guess and say that the blood he drew was for the A1c (HbA1c), which is a measure of your glucose levels over an extended period of time, usually 3-4 months.

Hi and welcome to the board.

Let's not worry until you get the results. If you are not diabetic, in that amount of time after eating your blood sugar should be close to normal. A random blood sugar (which is what you had done) with a result above 200 is diagnostic for diabetes also.

So please post the results when get them and lets see what we are dealing with.

Good Luck and I look forward to reading your messages.

Hi,

I got my results in! I did get the A1c test and my glucose level was at 89. I hear that is pretty good.

I am glad I do not have diabetes, but this was big wake-up call.

Thank you for all of your support!!!

That is normal. But since you ahve had this scare make the changes necessary in your life to prevent getting diabetes. Start getting exercise on a daily basis and get your weight as close to normal as possible. Hopefully you will be able to keep the beast from getting close to you for many years.

Please come back if you have questions or concerns.

A huge cheer!
