Ok, so I was walking today and a thought occured to me...

I was thinking about planning a visit to Cherokee, NC.  And then I thought, if I do that, I need to get my great-grandmother's name from my mom, so i can see if she's registered with the tribe.  If she is, then I can register with them, and that would be cool.

And then I thought about how I never check the A. Indian box on surveys and whatnot. I always check white/caucasion/whatever, because I'm only 1/8.  But my Granny was 1/2 (great-grandmother full, obviously) and my granny had type 2.  I *think* her mom did, too.  Anyway, Granny passed it down to my Aunt and now I have it.  We all know it tends to be inherited.

So my thought was... how many people who have type 2, but check the white box on forms could trace their family tree back to a person of African American, hipanic or A. Indian descent?   Its often passed down, so it would not only be possible, but very likely for the ethinicity to be "bred out", but the diabetic gene would just keep getting passed on.    Do you think anyone has researched that?  Surely they have.  I don't see how it would make a difference in treatment, but it would be very interesting to see.   Just to see how many people who think its just a family thing can actually trace it back to a person in their ancestry with one of those risk factor ethnicities.
