I was just wondering if there are any diabetics on this board. If so, how did you react when you were diagnosed? I ask because I had a Part 1 physcial last Wednesday. I have a suspcion that I may have diabetes for several reasons, including a family history of the disease that goes back at least 3 generations. One of the things the Dr. is testing for was diabetes. Another is a thyroid conditon. The more information I find on Diabetes, the more concerned I am that I will be diagonsed with it next Monday when they complete the physical & give me the results. I know that some diabetes can be controlled with diet & exercise. I really HATE needles. They scare me. I've been trying to remain calm but I think the not knowing is the scariest part. After an incident today I've begun to keep a food journal, including the times I eat & how I feel after I eat them. Today, I ate a jelly dougnut because I was flustered & in a hurry to be someplace. Stupid I know when I'm suspecting Diabetes. I got to where I needed to be & just as I got home about 2 hours later I felt SUPER tired, so I put Elizabeth in bed with me, & I crashed out. I slept from 10:30 until 1 pm! I DON'T DO THAT! Elizabeth wasn't able to get out of the room due to doorknob covers. We also have a baby gate that prevents her from gaining access to the rest of the house, except the hallway & her bedroom. Since my mid-twenties, I get spells that if I don't eat, sometimes for 2 hours & sometimes for longer or shorter periods of time, I get very lightheaded & nearly pass out. Because Diabetes has never really been talked about in my family, I didn't think anything of it. Before I freak out entirely, I'm trying to prepare myself for that diagnosis, gather information & some receipes. I don't know what else I can do. I also am taking my food journal to the Dr. with me next Monday. That way if it ISN'T Diabetes, we can work together on trying to figure out just what the heck may be wrong with & to help my change my eating habits. Does anyone have ANY ideas to help me. Also websites for Diabetic recepies? I've started an entire favorties folder of diabetes websites.
TIA
Mary

Hi Mary,
As Gabby said breathe! Panic won't stop the diagnosis and a fews day wait for the diagnosis in most cases makes no difference.
I am a type 2 diabetic and I was first managed for 6 years on diet and exercise. Then I moved on to one med and then two meds and finally this year to insulin. I have been diabetic 15 years. So please don't worry about going on insulin. In most type 2 diabetics it is not the starting point. The point is to get exercise and to get your weight as close to normal as possible. I like you, didn't do a good job of choosing my parents! I am also a third generation diabetic. Nothing I can do about that though.
Let me tell that even after you get the eating instructions you will still occassionally make stupid mistakes. We all do it, even now with 15 years of knowledge under my belt. We have a whole folder of diabetic recipes. If thee is something that you especially want to eat and can't find the recipe tell us, we may have the recipe already. One of the most important things to learn is that the diabetic eating plan is pretty normal and we don't call it a diet because it is a life style change. Diets you come and go on.
I don't want to overwhelm you with information. So lets take it one step at a time. Please post what your lab results are on Monday. They we can chat with you and see what we can explain to you. There are many people on this board and all of us have diabetes and know what it is like to be diagnosed. Rest easy, you are in good company.
