Any suggestions for flying?
| Thu, 12-16-2004 - 6:16pm |
Hi all! (It's ttuswtthng, I changed my name!) I've posted last time I flew about having some issues and so for Christmas SO and I are flying back to TX and we have a very early morning flight and so I'm worried about my BS levels. Last time, my levels got really low by the time we were landing and I was really shaky. I went today and bought some new strips for my monitor so that I would have a full supply to take with me. Since our flight is so early, I'm worried about having a good breakfast and still getting to the airport on time and then of course, all they are serving is a snack and it will be after lunch before land. Any suggestions to make the flight a little easier???
Thanks

Hi,
Flying can be challenging for diabetics...but I have been able to manage rather well by packing a meal to take with me on the plane, this allows me to stay on schedule and on my meal plan. I purchased an insulated bag and several of the small reusable blue ice bags to keep things cold. For lunch I pack half a turkey sandwich, a four ounce lite yogurt, celery and carrot sticks and a small apple. I have also been know to carry breakfast with me to enjoy once I arrive at the airport prior to my flight.
Hope this helps. Happy Holidays!
Jan
Hi Tara,
You threw me with your new name! I carry food and a glucometer and bottled water with me whenever I travel. I also have glucerna bars with me and when I went to Europe I took small boxes of raisins but I never ate any of them. In cases like this I think a peanut butter sandwich is a good thing to take to eat for your breakfast at your usual time of eating. And then three or four hours later have a small snack of string cheese and crackers for example if you plan to eat lunch after you land. You can also take some orange or apples with you and of course carrots and celery sticks. If you have eaten your snack on the plane make sure you test your blood sugar before lunch so you know what is going on and judge how much you need to eat.
I have been known to eat my snack even when I am on a flight that has meal service because the meal was too late for me but flying from southern California to Texas isn't long enough for the airlines to pack any food on board. Do be care of the amount of carbs that you eat on the plane that you didn't plan for. For example drinking tomato juice and eating the snacks crackers or nuts that they give you. Tomato juice is loaded with carbs and salt.
Remember your glucometer is your friend and help you figure out what to do.
More than anything else, have a good time while you are visiting,
Hugs,
