Update on my prediabetes...
| Mon, 06-04-2007 - 10:48pm |
Had my six-month cehck-up today and coming out of lurk to report in:
Not happy as diet, exercise and medication are NOT lowering my fasting blood sugars and my A1C is creeping up (from 5.7 in December to 6.o this month.
Dr. wonders if I'm not balancing my proteins. fats and carbs properly. So I'm off to the dietician in the hospitals diabetes wellness unit for a re-education on food with hopes that will help.
The doctor isn't concerned as yet, but not happy either...

Carol,
Thanks for reporting back. I am sorry you don't have better news but it is really positive that your doctor is following up on this and is trying to help you. How much are you exercising? Maybe if you can increase your exercise a little bit you can lose some of the pounds and get this under better control. Try to lose as much of the weight that you need before you become frankly diabetic as it is harder then.
I will be interested in what the dietitian tells you. Try taking in a food diary when you see her so she can just fine tune what you are doing.
Good luck and let us know how you are doing.
On another note: I was reading your siggy. Do you have free cross stitch patterns or what. I am a rabid stitcher when I have time and Abby isn't trying to catch my needle going in and out of the fabric or stealing my thread and scissors. I am lucky I haven't stitched the cat to something!
I have lost 44 pounds since December and am still losing about 1 pound a month... My real concern right now is will it STOP?! LOL My Dr. says it likely will and if I start to feel tired all the time, then to up my calorie intake and it will level off.
I figure I have abotu 15 pounds to go to get to my old "fit" weight...
I'm going to have to wing it re a food diary since by Wednesday, not that much time will have passed. But I suspect this first meeting will be to tell me to keep one so... I know what I've been "skipping" but I don't know if I'm eating the right proportions of proteins, veg and fruits, and I may still be eating some things I should be cutting out... It is hard since I am truly flying blind here, not doin moitoring adn only having blood tests and A1Cs every six months...
We have a thread on Stitcher's niche called "Thrifty Thursday" where we post links to free charts, patterns, etc. Boardies also sometimes post links to specific projects they have run across online... Come on by if you have the time. We'd love to have you!
By the way, I completely understand your cat and the thread! My three black cats have contributed the odd fur to stitched pieces too (my black cats SHED! LOL) and one (the male) is keen on threads/strings of all kind (he'd rather play with the thread on his "Da Bird" than the feather on the end! LOL) so he is always trying to capture the thread as it comes through the fabric...

Thanks!
It was kind of a downer, especially since I have been so blasted GOOD! Oh, I do break the rules now and again and have a burger with fries (Dr. banned white potatoes) but basically I've cut out all "white foods" (processed flours, white rice, white potatoes, corn and sugars...) and replaced everything with whole grains (I watch calories and grams of carbs there and go for minimum carb/maximum fiber brands --- YUCK but...), increased my fresh raw veg and fruit intake, and try to eat six small meals/snacks a day spread out over the day instead of pigging out at dinner (again hard for me to do as I HATE breakfast)...
And exercise --- three days a week, 20 minutes on weight training and 1.5 - 2 miles on the walking track... I have to force myself to do this as I am by nature a very sedentary person but, again, it's something I need to do.
Meds are 250mg metformin daily (I take it with my evening meal). I was on 500, one pill in the AM and one at night but I started having low blood sugar episodes that I woke up with and which lasted nearly all day, so we cut back to the one pill and the low blood sugar issue went away and I feel a lot better...
SO, it will be a puzzle for the dietician, I think... I am still hoping we can do this without daily monitoring, but am willing to go for monitoring if it means I can control this...

When they found my glucose was elevated, my dr had me get a meter.
Oh Carol!
2sweet02
Thanks everyone for the words of encouragement. I took several of these points with me to the dietician this AM and came away feeling a lot more positive.
She said I probably have 1) not been spreading my intake out evenly enough throughout the day (too true, especially when we were traveling, had house guests etc.); 2) may even not have gotten enough carbs in some meals and possibly too much protein in others(!!!); 3) and my triglycerides coupled with my A1C readings indicate a positive situation (apparently wonky triglycerides go along with insulin resistance, and mine are really really good! YAY!)...
I have an eating plan now, with suggested "exchanges" (never have understood them before!). A schedule to stick with and strong advice to even up my meals by eating a decent breakfast (the meal I tend to miss the most).
I have a few new foods to try as snacks, and permission to "break" my strict adherance to avoiding all things white (LOL!) and since I now understand exchanges a little better, I think I can without feeling guilty and overcompensating the next day (you can't carry over your unused allowances! Who Knew? I didn't! LOL)
I am to spread my exercise out so it becomes daily (it may be OK for fitness and weight loss to do it all in two or three days, but not for my blood sugar). THAT is going to be hard for sedentary me, but I have dusted off DH's treadmill and we are talking about rejuvenating the bikes (poor things will go into shock it has been so long since they have been used!)....
She also suggests waiting on the meter until the next check-up --- if things haven't stablized by then, we will have to get a bit more aggressive, 'cause that may well indicate that I have a strong genetic disposition (likely) that will require a bit more than preventative action.
Anyway, I'm feeling a lot more positive than I did on Monday as I have a better feel for what I can do (I apparently wasn't all that wrong --- just a little tweaking here and there re quatities and timing).
If I go back into lurk, by the way, it's not that I'm NOT here (I read the board every week!) but I just have so little to say and so little time to say it in. But I want you all to know that all the advice I have gotten here, directly in threads like this, and indirectly from my reading, have made me much more comfortable in quizzing the "experts" and getting myself set up in a program I think will work for me. So thank you all, VERY very much!

Carol,
I am so glad you had such a good visit with the dietitian. Life for us diabetics has become so much more normal and so much easier to manage now that we don't have to totally deny ourselves. I laugh about being sedentary because that was me! I now go to the gym 4-5 times per week and sometimes get an extra walk in on the weekends.
I hope you can stop by to visit again and I hope you will report after your next visit to the dietitian.
Have a great week,
