What are some of the blood sugar numbers That some of you go by to be good or bad. Even some of the doctors seem to have different opinions of the numbers.

Suzie,

Your doctor is really supposed to give you target goals for your blood sugar. It is part of your treatment and as important as any medication he might give you. I have been diabetic for 17 years and so my target numbers are probably a little higher than yours because I can't routinely get back to normal anymore. But I have no complications of my diabetes either. Hooray!!

One of the most important numbers to watch is your A1C and you need to have this tested every three to four months according to the American Academy of Clinical Endocrinologists. The most common recommendation for this test is 6.5 or less. In non diabetics 4-6 is normal and so if you can get it to that level you lessen your chance of developing complications from your diabetes.

It is frustrating the dueling recommendations! I usually use the ones from the AACE because those are the specialists that take care of us. But the ADA (American Diabetes Association) uses a little higher numbers. I think it is because less than half of the diabetics even meet those guideleines.

But the most important message is that the closer to normal that you can keep your blood sugar, A1C and weight the less likely you are to develop the complications of diabetes.

Please continue to post your questions and comments.
