Normal levels ?

I was diagnosed with Hypoglycemia about 8 years ago. I'm usually pretty good about my diet, but today I cheated. At 4:30pm I had a devil dog and small cup of coffee (1/2 decaf, 1/2 regular w/ a touch of sugar). At about 5:30, I started to feel off & took my blood sugar level and it was 120. I layed down and kept fighting this horrible anxiety feeling & blurry vision. About 20 minutes later, I checked again it it was 150. I decided to eat a peice of turkey w/ cheese, hoping the protein would make me feel better. 15 minutes after that I was at 162 ... about 10 minutes after that 184. Finally, it started coming down and at around 120 I was feeling myself again. (Around 7:00pm) Is this a normal rise and fall of blood sugar levels ? I'm not used to my levels being that high, because I'm normally lower. (w/in 70-120)

Any advice or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Grace

Grace,

Hi and welcome to the board. I have a question for you. What is a devil dog? Since I don't know what this is I am having a hard time fifuring out what this would do to your blood sugar. But I would suggest that you lay off the sugar in your coffee. Have you tired Splenda?

Cheryl makes the comment to you about whether you have been diagnosed diabetic. Because you have hypoglycemia you need to be watched carefully that you haven't become diabetic. And there is a form of diabetes called reactive hypoglycemia. Many times the line between hypoglycemia and diabetes is very blurry.

I await your answer before I say anything more but I am glad that

Yes ... you are right. A Devil Dog is kinda like a Hostess cake/Suzie Q. I forgot "Drake's Cakes" is only sold here in the East ... lol. In the past, a Devil Dog and small coffee has been comfort food for me. It has always made me feel better. Mentally, when I am having a rough day, that's what I treat myself to every once in a while. So, yesterday surprised and scared me. Do you think my body is changing & could be becoming Diabetic ?

I just ate breakfast ... 1/2 English Muffin w/ and egg, cheese & ham. My BSL when I woke up this AM was 97. It was 87 before I ate. I'm going to keep my eye on my levels this AM. Also trying to get an appt. w/ my Dr.

Thanks for the advice, girls ... any other suggestions ?? Also, how much does stress and our periods effect sugar levels ? My father is seriously ill with cancer, so I've been under alot of stress ... and I'm due for my period any minute. Being a woman is so much fun ...

Hey Grace, Stres has a lot to do with your blood sugar rising. I know all about the cancer thing. My husband passed away last summer a year ago this weekend, from colon cancer (: So I totally understand. I eat toast for breakfast and eggs sometimes not often. I also found sugar free blueberry slices and pound cake to eat, with butter on it yum o! I also did find that using the splenda on my Rice Krispies with strawberries or bananas on it for breakfast or even dinner is great and satisfying. The sugar free breakfast bakery stuff is great. Oatmeal even with splenda is gooooooooooood. I hope some of this helps.

I'm so sorry to hear about your husband. It's so hard to see someone you love go thru such a horrible illness. This weekend must be a very hard time for you, take good care of yourself.

Thank you for the food tips, they help alot.
