Vent and Question

Hello:

I have been doing good with losing weight, moderate exercise and lower blood sugar numbers despite not getting enough sleep. But sleep is my main problem. I had a cold a few weeks ago and now I keep getting mucus and drainage. The doc gave me a nose spray and singular, but it isn't working. The phlegm keeps me awake with either coughing or excess mucus and it keeps me awake. I can't sleep much at all. I don't know what to do.

Also, I can only eat on one side of my mouth due to jaw problems. A few times when I eat I hit a certain spot which sends me to the moon. It really hurts. DH thinks I have a cavity. But we have no dental insurance and can't afford a few hundred dollars in dental bills. I called several dentists and they won't take credit :( I am worried about my dental health with having diabetes. Is there any way a diabetic can get some kind of coverage to help out with this. I also haven't seen the eye doctor due to no insurance there either. I am a bit frustrated with all this and just need to vent, thanks. I am a bit worried now about my health as even though I am doing good, I feel miserable with these other problems.

Question: Do I have to stay away from all sugar or can I eat some as long as I am within my carb amounts?

Thanks.

Debbie

I think lack of sleep can also mess up glucose levels too.

A more serious problem is if the tooth becomes that painful you might actually have an abscess, nasty infection in the root of the tooth. That can require antibiotics AND really mess up the blood sugars.

I live in California and we have what is called MIA or Medi-Cal. for people with no insurance check out your city or state and see what they have. These cover dental in Calif.Call your local community hospital and see what most of them have.

Thanks so much Cheryl. It sure is frustrating not being able to sleep.

Also, thanks for the advice about the sugar. I do eatly mostly good carbs, but once in awhile I have sugar, but not much at all. I was just wondering if I do have some here and there what will happen.

I called the doctor's office and they said I can take Nyquil so I'll try that.

Take care.

Thanks for the information. I don't need anymore problems. So far my levels aren't up, but they might get that way evidentally. I am going to see the doctor soon if this keeps up.

Take care.

Debbie,

I, too, am concerned that you might have an abcessed tooth and that can really mess up your blood sugar. I am also in California and in my county they have a dental clinic as part of county health department. People who don't have insurance and need dental care go there. So I would check that out also.

Also if you have a dental school near you, often they have low cost dental services available. You might also call the dental association to see if they know of any dentists who take payments or do dental work pro-bono.

I know not having insurance is a pain. Yesterday I was working with a man who has a $3500. deductible. For all intents and purposes he has no health insurance either. I thought he needed to have diabetic education but he will have to pay for all of that himself and he can't afford that. All the while is blood sugar is not under control and he feels so bad that he has been missing work. This is a really vicious cycle.

The amount of sugar that you can have is 1 tsp which isn't very much. I find it easier to just leave the sugar alone. Sugar quickly raises your blood sugar and quickly dumps it also. So it really isn't worth it to me.

Mary Frances, when I answered Debbie's question about sugar, I took it that she meant food that might contain sugar not just sugar you might put in your coffee.

Cheryl,

I can't remember exactly how many carbs are in 1 tsp of sugar but I am sure it is less than 15 grams. The reason I said the 1 tsp is because if you want to make a dessert that needs to have sugar added to it then 1 tsp is the amount to use per serving. This usually works out to be 1/3 cup to 8-12 servings. Since I don't cook using artifical sweetners this is helpful to know.

I just looked up the carb measurement for granulated sugar: 1 tbsp is 12 grams of carbs so 1 tsp is like 4 grams.

But as you are aware simple sugar which is granulated sugar raises your blood sugar quickly and drops it just as fast. So I am sure you and I both try to stay away from it. There are different kinds of naturally occuring sugars such as lactose which is found in milk. Frustose, honey and fruit juice concentrate raises the blood sugar just like white sugar does. Frutose might raise blood sugar slower but it also raises cholesterol.

LOL! I have now told you more than you ever wanted to know! But since you asked I am sure there are others who didn't understand why I answered the way I did. It is really best to drink your beverage without sugar whether it is coffee or tea, which is when most people want to use sugar.

Well, you know, as someone who has not drank beverages with sugar for YEARS that was one thing that I did not have to 'give up'!
