Anyone Type I and Pregnant??
| Wed, 06-13-2007 - 1:53pm |
Hi,
I'm newly diagnosed with Type I diabetes (October 06) and now I'm 9 weeks pregnant. I'm really concerned because my A1C before conception was 7.9 (now it's 7.3) but I've read and have been told by my Dr.s that anything above 6 could cause fetal abnormalities. I was wondering if there's anyone here that has had a successful pregnancy with similar A1c numbers or if there's someone pregnant now and can offer some suggestions.
Thank you
Mattie

Hi Mattie and welcome to the board!
Welcome!! I'm also type one and had a baby 1/14/05. My numbers were similar to yours when I conceived, but while pregnant I was on insulin only and was able to get my a1c down to 5.5 most of the time I was pregnant. I found it was easier to lower my a1c on insulin because it was a much tighter control. Are you on insulin? I'm sure you aren't taking oral meds while prenant, right?
I hope that helps, and feel free to email me if you'd like to talk.... mmaielua7@hotmail.com. I did a lot of research on what I should and shouldn't eat while diabatic and pregnant.
Good luck and a big CONGRATS on your pregnancy.

Thanks Misty!
Thank you very much. I just went over there and that is definitely the place for me to be.
I'm so glad I found this board, I was really beating myself up at not having lower numbers before getting pregnant.
Yes, I am on insulin shots long and short acting. They work well it's just I wasn't taking enough in the beginning and couldn't stay low after means.
Thank you all.

Hi I am type 1 and just had my 4th baby May 1st my a1c was 6.5 when I got pg with her but it was crazy high with the boy's it was like 10.1 with my 1st child and hes a healthy almost 11 year old your a1c was not to high so im sure things are ok with the baby
Just work hard and do your best to keep them under control now and remember it will get harder to control as the pregnancy goes along mine more so in the third trimester I was not on the insulin pump with my 3 boys and had a lot of passing out from lows but with Kailey i was on the pump and didnt have that problem
If you have any questions feel free to ask here or you can email me through my profile best of luck to you hum Congrats on your pregnancy
aaaahhh....what a beautiful baby. Thank you so much for your information. It really helps to calm down do my best to remain in control of my numbers. Thank you for the heads up for what's to come. I was wondering if it would get easier or harder.
Thank you
Mattie
MAttie, I'm so glad we're able to help here. My doctor told me that an a1c under 7 was relatively safe for a fetus. So I think you are good as long as you keep the numbers down.
I was (and am agin now) on long and short acting insulin while pregnant with DD. I agree with a previous poster that it gets harder to keep the numbers low as the pregnancy goes on. I was up to 65 units of long acting Lantus the last couple months! But while breast feeding after she was born, I had so many lows I didn't take any unsulin and was on a very low dose of oral meds. So if you are planning on breast feeding, prepare for that. I had to snack all the time while bf.
Take care of yourself!

Hi,
Great news for you! My HA1C was a 13.4 when I found out I was pregnant at 5 weeks. Now, I dont suggest ANYONE do that but God was watching over me and I gave birth to a healthy baby boy 6.5 lbs!
The biggest plus for me is having supportive doctors. Doctors that scare you dont help. Its different than having supportive and encouraging doctors. I had them both and the ones that tried to scare me only stressed me out and made my sugars go high. having a supportive and encouraging team around me made me do my best to get my numbers down and under control. i ate tons of protein during my pregnancy, milk and fruit. By the time he was born, my numbers were down to 7.4.
Abnormalities can happen .... but, there is always hope. My hope was in God and I prayed every night and kept a journal to God and my baby that he be born healthy.
He was diagnosed with a hole in his heart about two weeks after birth but it closed and he hasnt had any health problems since then.
My advice to you is to stay positive, surround yourself with encouraging people and work hard to lower your HA1C in a healthy way. But you are WAY ahead of the game compared to me so keep your head up :)
Hi everyone,
I've been doing really good at controlling my numbers during the day. I'm experiencing more lows than highs. Not too low (60s). My Dr. changed my insulin from Lantus to NPH. I think that's why I'm running low so offten. With NPH, I drop about 4 hours after taking it where as the Lantus, I was pretty even all day. I was told that Lantus isn't approved for use during pregnancy. Misty I see that you were on Lantus and everything turned out fine. I questioned it and my Dr. said there's not enough evidence to show that it is safe for use. She said it's a 'newer' type insulin. I just have to make sure I eat on time with NPH...fine with me.
Beciology, thanks for your note. I definitely am praying for a healthy baby and trusting and believing that everything will be alright.
Hi,
Glad to hear things are going well. I was on a long acting insulin during my pregnancy and toward the end I was running extreme lows (like in the 30s) in the middle of the night. I cant remember the type of insulin I was on ( it was almost 7 years ago :) wow! time flies) So, just be careful. I had to go back to my original obgyn because that doctor wouldnt readjust my insulin.
Take care :)
