Today is a better day... not feeling the anger as much and finally *grin* have an appointment with Diabetes Ed. through my insurance. (Happily, it is also through my employer, a hospital, and makes it ssooo much easier to get to! LOL) Unfortunately, it isn't until July 9th, but they will call me if there is an opening. I will get my monitor and stuff on that day and start then. My sis in law is also diabetic so I will probably contact her and see if I can test when I can to keep some sort of an idea on my levels until then. Someone in a previous post mentioned checking my insurance for coverage on strips and such... I hadn't thought of that so I will definitely check on it.

Now I have a slight dilemma ( I guess you could call it that! LOL) My DH, who is still very supportive, can't understand my reactions since getting the news of my diagnosis of diabetes 3 days ago. All he brings up when I'm talking to him about it is "Why did you eat 1/2 of my churro Monday night if you knew as of that day you were diabetic?" I try to explain the anger, denial, and sadness I felt and in all honesty... wasn't really thinking about what I ate that night... nor did I care. (Since that time, I"ve been ULTRA diligent I promise! LOL) He doesn't understand that rationalization and keeps dwelling on it. I told him to get over it and move on... I have! LOL It still frustrates me though... that I can't explain it so he at least remotely understands.

Anyway, I'm done venting for now... thank you for listening! I"m happy I've found you here!

Hate to say it but your hubby sounds like the food police!!! They are a common pain for diabetics!! It is possible sometimes to take your spouse to the diabetic education classes.

Bottom line is now diabetics are not told they cannot eat anything with sugar in it. What the education unit SHOULD do is help you develop a food PLAN!! A half a churro while probably NOT the healthiest snack is still potentially allowed as long as you are working it into your food plan!! Now if you had gotten 6 churros and eaten all of them, that would definitely be dangerous... but usually just remember eating in moderation is best!!
They will probably teach you to do carb counting. You will be allowed so many carbs per meal and or snack. You can have small amounts of sweets if you work it into your plan!! While it is better to eat things that are healthier, it is possible to work a small amount into your plan.

At this point you are sort of like driving your car on a trip but have not been given a map yet, so in a sense traveling as fast as you can(or in diabetic terms not eating anything you thing must be bad(no sugar, no carbs, no starchs, etc) will help you lose some weight fast, but at this point the best thing to do is try to avoid or limit, the sweets and heavy starches since both affect your glucose numbers, but don't stress over every bite you eat. Actually the stress might raised your BG level more that a bite of chocolate cake. Best thing is to eat what you eat in moderation and probably avoid the really heavy starches and sweets especially in large amounts. Its better to try to pay attention to the amount you are eating, and for instance going out and eating pasta or oriental meals often have huge amounts of rice or pasta. I want to say a serving of either is a half cup(i could be wrong) but most restaurants serve between 1 and 2 cups!! they can be just as bad as the sweets! If you look around this board, there is some good basic information on eating healthy. I would suggest avoiding sweetened sodas and even fruit juice if you can. Aside from anything else they tend to raise and lower your BG level fast.
