Problems with Infusion Site

Hey, I have a question I was hoping to get some feedback on. I have used an insulin pump for three years now. Until three months ago, I never had any problems at all. However, for the past couple of months, every time I take out my infusion set, the area is irritated. I have a bump underneath my skin, a little pimple where the needle was inserted and the area surrounding it is all red.

I switched infusion sets from the plastic to a metal needle, but that didn't make a difference. I've changed sites and shortened the amount of time I keep the needle in but still nothing. My doctor and the people at Mini-Med have been trying different things but nothing seems to work. I get an infection every single time I take my infusion set out now. Has anyone else ever experienced this problem and if so, what did you to to correct it? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for the help.

While I don't have a pump I did have some redness problems when I was on a continuous glucose meter study last year. It was because of my allergy to adhesive tape. So I agree with Anita's suggestion. Also make sure that your skin is as clean as possible so that you limit the amount of skin (normally occurring) bacteria into the site. I am sure the company is thinking that you have developed an allergy to something otherwise they wouldn't have changed you from a plastic needle to a metal one. But the problem may be the adhesive that is used to hold the infusion set in place.
