Really high blood sugar!

I was diagnosed as Prediabetic a few months back.

I don't know what got into me, but I had a big bowl of oatmeal w/brn sugar & raisins -along with 2 pieces raisin toast (& 3 slice turk bacon) this morn.

I've never felt such a reaction. My bs - was 280 an hour later. 320 2 hours later. It's been in the 200s for the past 250 3 hours later & 220 6 hours later!

I'm pretty sure it's a reaction to all those carbs at once!

I'm pretty scared now. And I have a lot of questions.

- Should I have gone to the ER? What should I do?
- Is there anything a person can eat once a lot of carbs are eaten - to bring it down????

I'll post more questions later......

If high blood sugar is left untreated, the following symptoms may occur (signs of ketoacidosis):

weakness, pains in stomach, aching all over

heavy, laboured breathing

loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting
What to Do:

call doctor or diabetes educator immediately

take fluids without sugar if able to swallow

test blood sugar frequently

test urine for ketones

Good News!!!!!!! But I've sure been scared.
I did end up going downtown to see The Doc.

Bottom line: My meter is out of whack!!!!!!!!!!
Surely, this must be a common reason behind many high blood sugars!?
I'm such a dope, I didn't realize that it was a real possible reason - I'd wondered, but went to see him, regardless!

He went ahead & blood tested me, anyway.
I got a new meter &
the A1 Test came back 4 point something.
Fasting was 89 with fingerstick & 109 with big blood draw.

I'm so relieved!

He also said if I can lose some weight it will help me a whole lot - which I already knew -- I've been trying hard to lose - exercising a lot, but not dropping more than maybe 1 pound in 3 mos! He says it's calories, but I've been trying so hard to eat better. I've been walking fast 3 miles atleast 3x a week.

I wonder if it's flab turning to muscle????

I'm relieved to hear & learn what I did this morn, but I'm still waiting to see what the fasting blood glucose in July is going to say!!!!!

They say that just 5% weight loss will lower your numbers.

I was a good girl yesterday & went & did my workout late in the day Saturday- which I don't think I'd EVER done at that time. Place was almost deserted except for some old people. 3.5 miles in 1 hour.

To be specific, I started at 153 at 5'6" about 3 mos ago. I've lost maybe to 152 or 151 consistently. I just can't get it down! Am wondering about the fat to muscle component. But at walking atleast 3 miles ea time, say 3-4x a week - sometimes 3.5 to almost 4 miles......you'd think something would be happening!

Maybe I am eating too much fat. My dietitian checked my diaries last time & pointed out some things to watch & I've been watching them - I THINK. IE - no more regular bacon, only turkey bacon & not that much. Not so many green olives. etc. She seemed to point out a lot of SNACKS that may be over the limit, so I've tried to watch them. Even eating salads virtually dressingless.

So 5% of say, 152, would be......... say 8 lbs ?

I want to impress my doc & dietitian the next times I go back in mid to late July......

I've heard YOGA could burn more cals than a heavy walk workout. Do you know? Am going to try to do more of those sessions!
