What a kitty, MaryFrances...

You are not going to believe your kitty looks almost just like my Boots that I lost 2 years ago. Tuxedo cats are wonderful and I want another one! How old is she? My little Cali has gained too much weight and the vet said to put her on a diet. She lost 2 pounds and then we noticed she started gaining again. Well, she was dining out. We started to see evidence of kritter remains so the vet said to go back to feeding her again. She's a smart one! Does your kitty go outside? I wish I could keep her in, but we found her when she was about five, and making her stay in when she's used to the outside wasn't an option, even according to her!

Yes, I'd much prefer to walk outside but it is so humid here and while I can take the heat, the humidity kills me. As for the Starlix, I take one anywhere from five to twenty minutes before I eat. BUT, and I know this sounds silly, I do not eat that much. My husband can't figure out why I can't lose weight either. The friends we vacation with just can't believe why I don't lose the weight, they've seen what I eat, and I do eat more because I love the shrimp you get when you're at the ocean. Breakfast consists of a yogurt or a bowl of Cheerios, lunch is a salad, and dinner is usually another yogurt, with a very, very small dish of sherbet later while watching TV. Sometimes I do sneak a few of my husband's potato chips when he's eating them, but it's only 5 or 6 chips. The only things I drink are coffee (with Splenda) and water. I love Diet coke, but the acid in it bothers my feet (??) for some reason. After drinking one, my feet tingle and I tend to retain water when I drink one, so it's down to water, or Crystal Light occasionaly. These higher bg counts just started since I've gained the last 10 pounds. Needless to say, I'm doing everything I can to get it and much more off. I feel really stupid for gaining any of it back anyway. I think I just need a good kick in the behind!!!

Take care and thanks for "talking" to me.

Debbi,

If you look further down the board you will see pictures of Abby when I got her. She was a feral baby, captured they think at one week. She came to live with me when she was eight weeks old and weighed 1.7 pounds. She has big feet but she isn't very tall with just a long body. She is an indoor kitty and she doesn't even ask to go outside. She has only been outside 3 times since I got and always in my arms. The vet was concerned that she was going to be too heavy and so he decreed that I measure her food. I actually think that when she goes in for her annual visit in September that they are going to tell me she is a little too thin. But her fir is beautiful and she is quite active, climbing on top of cabinets in the kitchen and the shelf in my closet. She will be a year old around the 4th of July. I guess I should have named her Libby or something like that but I was so surprised to get her that I couldn't think up a name for her. My boss gave her to me in the middle of a staff meeting and when I took her out of the box she started purring.

My husband was furious about my getting another cat. I explained that she was a present and what was I going to do. His retort was that I should have found someone who wanted a cat. Well, I left and went off the gym to do my exercise and when I came home he had a big smile on his face. It didn't take her long to win him over and he has a special place in her life. He plays with her and carries her around. It is just amazing because he has never had anything to do with any of the other cats. My role in her life is to hold her in my arms and let her sleep there!

She weighs between 8-9 pounds now so she is a nice size cat, larger than my Cleo but not so big that I can't pick her up. I really must take some more pictures of her to post here.

Debbi, you may not believe me, but you may not be eating enough of the right things to lose weight. How long has it been since you saw a dietitian? It looks like you need some meal planning help. I am by the way, not surprised that diet coke or pepsi bothers you. Have you seen how much sodium is in these drinks?

You can also gain weight on Sulfonylureas which is the class of drugs that Starlix is in. Although I think Starlix isn't as bad as some of the others because of its short action. Januvia is supposed to help you lose weight. Januvia is the oral version of Byetta and Byetta does a better job at helping diabetic to lose weight but it must be taken by injection. It is most common to take Starlix 1 to 15 minutes before eating at all meals. And as I said yesterday it lasts 4 hours which is nice. It was designed to mimic how our beta cells functioned when they functioned correctly. If you are on a meal plan to lose weight most often it is recommended that it not be less than 1600 calories. In the Hanging On folder is an article entitled "eating to beat diabetes". It is nice article and there are various meal plans laid out in it. You might check this out.

Thanks, ladies, I will see a dietician, it may help. Part of the reason I don't eat much is that I'm just plain ole not hungry. Weird, isn't it?

Mary Frances, I can't stop looking at your kitty. She is so beautiful. I just want to hug her and snuggle with her. My Cali is a love bug, but only on the ground. No picking up, no laying in lap. But your husband sounds like me. My husband wants to get Cali a buddy, but I don't want another cat right now. Cali is a very accepting cat, laid back, but since she's eight years old, I think a kitten might be a little much. By the way, she weighs 17 pounds. We got her down to 15, but that's when she started dining out, which I think she did again this morning as she didn't eat much of her breakfast. I just can't believe you got her at such a young age and she managed to become a cutie like she is. I envy you, she really is a doll!

Thanks,

Debby
