NPH Question

Hi,

I was recently switched from Lantus long acting to NPH long acting. I'm still trying to get use to it. I was wondering.....if I take NPH in the morning at 8am, in 4 hours it will kick in and start lowering me which would be around lunch time. If my pre-lunch BS number is 70 do I still give my pre-lunch Novolog to cover what I'm eating? Will that take me too low?

I haven't been giving myself a dose of Novolog before lunch if I'm in the 60-70 range so I won't risk going too low unless I'm having a big carb lunch.

Has anyone had this issue?

Thanks

Mattie

Mattie,

You really need to be talking to your doctor. I personally don't think that you should be giving yourself the novolog when your blood sugar is less than 80. Perhaps the doctor will have you cut your dosage in half. What is your dosage regime for the novalog? Frequently it is 1 unit per 17 grams of carbs.

Did you see my message about Lantus being recently approved by the FDA for pregnant diabetics? I learned this last week when I went to my education classes.

Incidentally you may find it interesting how they decide that a drug isn't dangerous for pregnancy. Since there is no one in the world who would submit to testing to see if a drug is dangerous to the mother or the developing baby, they have to figure out what to do with drugs when women accidentally become pregnant. Turns out there is a registry where women are listed who became pregnant while on a given drug and then they are followed through their pregnancy to see if there are complications to either the mother or the developing baby. When enough of these cases occur and nothing untoward happens to either the mother or the baby then the drug company can submit this data to the FDA and the FDA

Hi Maryfrances,

Yes, I saw that information and I will be talking to my Dr. about it at my next appt. This NPH is driving me crazy. I had a better week this week with it but it's a lot of work. I'm also considering the pump. From what I've read it will make my life much easier.

I have an appt. today with the maternal fetal specialist so I'll know more on how she wants to handle things also. I'll update you later.

Thanks for the info.

Mattie
