The FDA has approved Janumet which is a combination of metformin and Januvia. Januvia is the oral version of Byetta. The new combination contains a DPP-4 inhibitor (Januvia) that enhances the release of insulin and regulates digestive hormones that impact glucose metabolism and the hepatic insulin sensitizer metformin. Combination drugs enhance compliance by reducing costs and the number of pills taken daily.

Janumet is available in two sizes: 50/500 mg and 50/1000 mg and is typically taken twice per day. The maximum dose should not exceed 100 mg of Januvia or 2,000 mg of metformin.

Adverse reactions are the same as experienced with metformin. Please remember that this pill and all pills which contain metformin must be stopped when having any diagnostic procedure requiring iodine contrast dye.
