I've been a BAAAD girl!

Started a couple of weeks ago, when I hurt my knee and spent several days in a drug induced haze not eating or taking my meds.  Since then we've been doing a lot of running preparing for my Grandson's 1st birthday, which meant eating out & mostly hitting fast food joints.  I keep forgetting to put my 2nd glucometer in my purse, along with additional meds and I just basically have been in TOTAL rebellion and off the diet wagon, even forgetting to check my BS and take my meds when I am home.

I go back for my 3rd diabetes education class tomorrow AM and I know I'm gonna hear about it big time--not that I don't royally deserve it.  I've been trying to get back on track, but am really struggling and fighting MAJOR carb cravings.  The last of the Cheetos, I bought in a moment of weakness, went at lunch--SIGH!  Any ideas how to help get myself psyched up to get back on track?  Part of me wants to do so desperately and part of me just wants to say to heck with it and stay with my old bad eating habits, even though I know it's a virtual death sentence!

Aaarrrgghhhh!

I think there are times most of us go through rebellious periods!!

One thing to remember while struggling over carb cravings is the more unhealthy carbs you eat the more you will crave more!! Yep that makes it really hard to break the cycle BUT on the other hand, I find it helps to know that is what is causing it to be so hard. IT is not quite as bad as fighting cravings you know will never end!! I mean yes, we normally will crave carbs to some extent because they do give us energy BUT the struggle over what you are fighting with right now is not going to last forever, it will get easier as you get back to healthy eating!

This might sound like a weird combination but I too like cheetos. I usually stock the break room cuz no one else wants to go get supplies, so I get the small size bags. I will usually bring baby carrots to work and when i am stressed in the morning I work on them. If I still am struggling with cheeto cravings I will then either have 2nd bag of carrots and then the final thing is a small can of tomato juice(i am not crazy about V8). for some reason most of the time by the time I drink the tomato juice the craving goes away. Even better I have eaten 2 veggies for the day!!

It also might help to stop and look at just what you have been eating. Have you really totally gone off the healthy eating wagon? I think a lot of times when we say we have totally gone back to the bad eating habits, we sometimes actually have still made some mildly wise choices. So we gave in and ate a sweet roll, but I am betting most of us did not eat a dozen or half dozen rolls! Sometimes I believe it does help to give ourselves credit for NOT just totally going off the wagon. Maybe we were close, but I bet there are times you actually chose the healthier of 2 bad choices!! I believe the more we kick ourselves for failing, the harder it is to get back on the wagon!! I am NOT saying don't recognize the bad choices, but save your energy to get back on the wagon instead of wasting it by kicking ourselves for how bad we were.

I used to love reading Dell Shannon mysteries. Her Lt Medoza of the police had this saying. Its been too long since I read it, but it is something real basic like "tomorrow is also a day". We can't change what we have done, but we can use the energy to change wht we will do, so why waste it kicking ourselves for what we did!

Marci,

There aren't any saints around here and we have all at one time or another done what you are doing! If you must have cheetos, look on the back of the package see how many carbs are in one serving and eat only that many and subtract those carbs from your next meal. That, my dear, is the value and purpose of carb counting.

Remember stress causes us to want whatever foods we have used for comfort. Doesn't mean that those things were good for us!

I find that when I am clearly off course several things have been going on: First off, I haven't been drinking enough liquids and secondly I have been neglecting eating something that I am supposed to eat such as my fruits. The fastest way to stop this is to use a food diary. Because you have to think about what you are doing before you write it down and therefore the problem foods don't land on your plate or in your tummy!

As such, you have had your gentle shove! Love yourself and don't worry about what you did yesterday or even earlier today, just vow to get back on the wagon and do what you are supposed to be doing. Now do it!!

Take care and let us know how you are doing,
