I'm trying to keep an eye on my carbs and sugars. I've had Fit Day software for years. Here's what I ate today:
Calories: 1099
Protein: 94 grams or 34 percent.
Fat: 45 grams 36 percent
Fiber: 15 grams
Carbs: 86 grams or 28 percent
I have a feeling I've eaten too many carbs. I'm not going to test my glucose until the morning.

Hi Amy,
No, you haven't eaten too many carbs. Usually we get at least 90 carbs per day. I would say that you haven't had enough fiber and too much fat but I am not used to seeing this in percentages. The recommendation for fiber is 20-35 grams per day. Meat needs to be about 8 ounces cooked per day. Milk needs to be 2 servings per day but remember that is also part of your carbs.
Why are you eating 1000 calories per day? Actually it is recommended that diabetics eat no less than 1200 cals per days unless so directed by your doctor. You can put yourself in starvation mode and your body will increase your blood sugar. So please be careful.
DId you make the appointment with your doctor yet?

Was this the same dr you saw in the ER you didn't like?
Did you ask for a referal to diabetes education classes or to a diabetic educator to try to get an eating plan that would meet your goals.
One caution which I think Mary Frances will also make is be sure you take the glucopage with food. I am pretty sure that has metformin in it.
The book mentioned in other messages by Gretchen Becker about the First year of Diabetes Type 2 would probably give you a lot of good info!!! At least your doctor gave you the monitor. I didnt get one until I went to the diabetic education classes and that was first scheduled a month in the future!!

Hi All,
I know its late for me to be getting to the boards and I am sorry I couldn't join this conversation earlier today.
Glucophage and metformin are the same drug. It is just trade name vrs generic name. I hope Amy wasn't started on a dose higher than 250 mgm twice per day even once per day would be better. It takes about 2 weeks for your system to get use to the glucophage. Gastric upset is the most common side effect and in most cases goes away in two weeks. My words of advise to Amy are "hang in there, the side effects will pass and you will be okay."
I am sorry but I get the feeling that Amy is being expected to manage her disease without the proper assistance and she isn't ready to do that yet. Even I can't do this and shouldn't. I get the feeling the Amy's doctor isn't taking the diagnosis seriously and that is a crying shame. I get really frustrated when that happens to someone around here. Generalist should be able to care for Amy and she really doesn't need to see a specialist. I am glad to see that Amy is supposed to return in two weeks.
Amy your morning blood sugar is too high. The current recommendation from the American Academy of Clinical Endocrinologists is 110 or less. You are new or naive diabetic. You should be able to meet this goal easily. Having been a diabetic for 17 years it is very hard for me to meet this goal.
Amy, when you go into the doctor in two weeks take a glucose record with you showing when you took your blood sugar and include some tests 2 hours after you finish eating. Also take a food and exercise log with you. Make sure you give your doctor copies of these for your chart. Make sure the doctor understands that you are serious about managing your disease and preventing complications. Take off your shoes and socks. If the physician doesn't check your feet, remind her to do so.
Most doctors are very happy to work with patients who are serious about taking care of themselves. In fact for most doctors patients like this are a breath of fresh air.
